People walking\u003cbr/\u003eMardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, the final day of a 12-day Carnival season in New Orleans, was marked by parades, marching bands and carnival krewes tossing colourful beads to revellers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe weather was sunny and cold with temperatures staying around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) on Tuesday (16 FEB 2010). \u003cbr/\u003eBut that didn''t do much to chill a party that has been rolling since the New Orleans Saints won their first National Football League Super Bowl.\u003cbr/\u003eThe joy of that win fed right into Mardi Gras, lifting the city''s spirits five years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.\u003cbr/\u003eMany along the parade route on Tuesday wore Saints jerseys. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Saints were toasted as kings, invited by krewes to ride floats across the city. \u003cbr/\u003eQuarterback Drew Brees, coach Sean Payton and owner Tom Benson served as monarchs of parades, while players Devery Henderson, Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and others rode a float built by the Krewe of Zulu.\u003cbr/\u003eThey sparked huge cheers, especially when they tossed small foam footballs to the crowd.\u003cbr/\u003eMayor Ray Nagin and other city officials rode on horseback to the reviewing stand where they watched the parades and toasted the krewes who organize them. \u003cbr/\u003eNagin, making his last ride as mayor, wore a jacket saluting the Saints.\u003cbr/\u003eBy afternoon, crowds on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter had grown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cold also didn''t stop the tradition of people on balconies tossing beads to the crowd below in exchange for a glimpse of flesh.\u003cbr/\u003eElaborate costumes filled the street, with heavy emphasis on the Saints: Two men dressed as the Lombardi Trophy - the totem of the National Football League championship - and another group dressed as fleur-de-lis, the unofficial emblem of the city and the team.\u003cbr/\u003eMardi Gras ends at midnight on Tuesday.
