Wide of Tai Chi students and pan across
A new study by Australian researchers has found that the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi could have positive health benefits for arthritis sufferers.
It's the first comprehensive analysis of the role of Tai Chi in treating musculoskeletal pain, drawing on the experiences of patients who say the exercise improves their physical abilities.
Tai Chi is a gentle form of martial arts which has been popular in China for centuries.
But claims that it can relieve arthritis means it now has growing following in America and Australia as this class in Sydney shows.
Everyone here has some form of muscular or skeletal problem and they, like the scientists from Sydney's George Institute, are convinced regular classes like this can reduce their pain and increase their mobility.
Lead researcher Amanda Hall reached the conclusion after analysing data from seven separate randomised controlled trials which assessed the impact of Tai Chi on the physical condition of arthritis patients.
Although there is no specific medical evidence to support the idea that Tai Chi helps arthritis, Hall says most patients surveyed in her review reported an improvement in their pain and mobility levels thanks to the exercise.
Tai Chi has many forms, and the movements practised in classes like this one, have been specifically developed to benefit arthritis sufferers.
Hall says although Tai Chi is a form of martial defence, it has become popular among patients because its movements are gentle and don't put too much pressure on painful joints.
Julie Court has suffered from arthritis for over a decade, but after eight months of Tai Chi she claims she's already improved her stability and flexibility.
Arthritis patient Barbara Grimley has been practicing Tai Chi for nearly eighteen years and has been so impressed by the impact of the exercise on her body that she recently became an instructor in the martial art.
She says it's helpful because it allows arthritis sufferers to exercise their joints constantly, yet slowly.
Another patient Michael Williams says although Tai Chi hasn't stopped his pain, he fears that if he stops the exercise he'll cease up altogether.
Arthritis is a major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia, with 3.85 million people suffering from the condition.
Tai Chi can be practised individually at home and in classes like these, allowing patients to manage their own exercise regime.
The research team is now in the early stages of a new trial to establish whether Tai Chi has positive benefits for sufferers of chronic low back pain, with the first results expected by the end of 2009.
Tai Chi originated in China, but in Beijing the Australian study isn't getting an overwhelming endorsement.
Here it is a way of life an art and a sport, and the ancient art isn't, in itself, considered to be a cure for arthritis.
The Shi Cha Hai School of Sports is renowned in China and its alumni includes Hollywood actor and martial arts expert Jet Li.
Young men and women come here to learn all forms of martial arts and the instructors regard Tai Chi is as more of a meditative practice.
One of Beijing's top coaches, Zhang Xianming, says Tai Chi can be used therapeutically, but only combined with other remedies, such as acupuncture and Chinese traditional medicine.
Although not a doctor, Zhang says there could be limited health benefits from practicing Tai Chi.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
