Mid shot of Katana sword in presentation display\u003cbr/\u003eMade famous by Japan's legendary samurai warriors, Katana swords were at the cutting-edge of military technology in its day. \u003cbr/\u003eThe secrets of Japan's master sword makers have been closely guarded for generations. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now a company in Cambodia is perfecting the art of Katana sword making, by training local people with little previous experience.      \u003cbr/\u003eThe Katana sword is regarded by some as the finest blade ever made.\u003cbr/\u003eEach Katana blade is made according to a rigorous process that takes from a month and half to two months to complete.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe process begins in a charcoal-fired forge where the blade's raw steel is heated to over 800 degrees centigrade.\u003cbr/\u003eSparks fly as these highly skilled blacksmiths hammer the molten metal into the characteristic curved shape of a Katana sword.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe company's blacksmiths are from the minority Cham-Muslim community who are renowned in Cambodia for their metal-working skills.\u003cbr/\u003ePoung Ply is the head blacksmith. He says that he learned how to forge metal from his father back in his village.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the basic shape is formed, an axle-grinder is used to carve the Katana sword's characteristic lines. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the firing process is complete the swords are polished in a series of steps.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe sword's wooden handle is carved by hand before an individually engraved hand-guard is added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe handle is then covered with manta-ray skin which is covered in imported Japanese silk.  \u003cbr/\u003eChristophe Hiriart is a Production Manager at the company.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that the workers have been trained from scratch to make the swords and are very enthusiastic and motivated.\u003cbr/\u003eMao Kruy is one of the sword maker at Citadel. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that after five years he has learned how to make a sword from beginning to end.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Cambodian-made Katanas compete in quality with Japanese-made swords, they are sold at a fraction of the cost.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne blade costs from $2000 - $3000 compared to about $30,000 for a high-quality Japanese blade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company has a small showroom in Phnom Penh where it markets its swords to foreign collectors. \u003cbr/\u003eHead of sales Catherine Hiriart says that the high quality and competitive price of Citadel's Katana swords makes them popular with collectors around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eEstablished by French ex-patriots in 1997, Citadel manufactures a wide variety of deadly blades, including hunting knives and daggers.  \u003cbr/\u003eCitadel produces about 300 swords a year - all for export because selling swords is illegal in Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
