One of the other things we really are looking at is the lost recreational use, the beaches, which have been closed, and we want to try to get them cleaned up and open as son as possible. It's the long weekend and the impact has been relatively severe on the beaches.\"\u003cbr/\u003e18. environmental officials said on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialists walked blackened shores as helicopters flew over the area to assess damage and track the slick, which could also threaten a pristine coral reef off the coast of La Parguera, a diving site popular with tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities were still investigating the origin of the spill, which stretched along an estimated 8 miles (13 kilometres) of shoreline from the southwestern town of Guanica to Guayanilla Bay.\u003cbr/\u003eJavier Velez Arocho, secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, which has closed beaches in the area, said the impact area of the spill had been quite extensive.\u003cbr/\u003eClean up crews clad in protective suits and boots walked the shoreline, lugging plastic bags full of oily debris and sand to be trucked away. \u003cbr/\u003eThe workers targeted the most heavily contaminated beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eDrake Lilyestrom, Director of Marine Resources, Puerto Rico Ramos, said federal authorities told him the fuel was either dumped by a ship in the Caribbean Sea or emanated from a \"local source.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe gave no further details.\u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Jim Tunstall, commander of US Coast Guard operations in the eastern Caribbean, said five shoreline assessment teams were deployed to determine the nature and extent of the try to discover the origin of the fuel, believed to be bunker oil, used to power older vessels.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement, the Coast Guard said the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, into which oil companies must pay to cover the costs of spills, has been tapped for containment and recovery operations in the US Caribbean territory.\u003cbr/\u003eAn investigation is under way to identify a responsible party which could be liable for up to three times the cost of clean up, according to the Coast Guard.\u003cbr/\u003eVelez estimated that the clean up would take several
