On the other side of the border, east of the southern Gaza strip town of Khan Younis, the daylight revealed the damage caused to some houses by Israeli retaliation fire. \u003cbr/\u003eThe clashes on Friday between troops and Palestinian militants widened into some of the fiercest fighting in the Gaza Strip since Israel''s military offensive there last year.\u003cbr/\u003eGaza''s Islamic Hamas rulers confirmed their gunmen were involved in Friday''s violence - marking a shift from the group''s tendency over the past year to avoid confrontation with Israeli forces. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael''s military said its troops crossed into Gaza after they spotted militants planting explosives along the security fence on the border. A gunbattle broke out, leaving two soldiers and two militants dead, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe soldiers were the first to die in clashes with Gaza militants since January 27, 2009, nine days after Israel''s military offensive in the territory ended, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian groups did not confirm the Israeli military''s claim that two militants were killed in the clashes.\u003cbr/\u003eFurther south in Gaza, Israeli forces backed by tanks and helicopter gunships fired into a sparsely populated border area near the city of Khan Younis, Hamas security officials said. Militants responded with mortar fire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting followed a string of recent Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel that have ratcheted up tensions along the Israel-Gaza border. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo other soldiers were wounded and evacuated to a hospital, the military added. \u003cbr/\u003eMajor General Yoav Galant, the commander of Israel Defence Force Southern Command, said one of the soldiers was killed when a bullet hit a grenade he was carrying and it exploded. \u003cbr/\u003eGaza medical officials reported that one civilian was killed and seven were wounded in the fighting. Militants reported one wounded and one missing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli military described the action in the area as a routine defensive operation meant to protect southern Israel from militants who attack it with rockets and explosives.\u003cbr/\u003eFriday''s violence was some of the worst in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip since January 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas'' military wing, said Hamas declared \"our complete responsibility for killing a number of Israeli Zionist soldiers and injuring others, during an attack and a strong exchange of fire with the occupation soldiers.\" \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on Friday, a Hamas official said the deaths of the soldiers was a \"gift\" from Hamas to Jerusalem and to Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, whose body was found on January 20 in a Dubai hotel, and who is widely believed to have been killed by Israeli agents.\u003cbr/\u003eLate on Friday, Hamas held a celebratory march in Jebaliyah, in the northern Gaza Strip. \u003cbr/\u003eHamas supporters, carrying the movement''s green flags, marched towards the house belonging to al-Mabhouh''s family, where his mother and other relatives handed out sweets announced Israeli construction in east Jerusalem derailed US-mediated negotiations that Palestinians and Israelis had agreed to launch just before the diplomatic feud erupted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe
