Exterior of burning club\u003cbr/\u003eA former rock-band manager whose pyrotechnics caused a fire in a US nightclub that killed 100 people, was sentenced on Wednesday to four years in prison.\u003cbr/\u003e29 year-old Daniel Biechele could have been sentenced to as much as 10 years behind bars under a deal he struck with prosecutors in February, when he pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sentence came after two days of anguished testimony from the victims'' families.\u003cbr/\u003eBiechele was the tour manager for ''heavy metal'' band ''Great White'' when on 20 February 2003 he lit a pyrotechnics display that ignited highly flammable foam that lined the walls and ceiling of The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. \u003cbr/\u003eThe foam was used as soundproofing and was placed there by the owners after neighbours complained about noise from the club.\u003cbr/\u003eBiechele is the first person to be sentenced in connection with the fire. The owners of the club are awaiting trial on manslaughter charges.    \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the 100 people who were killed that night either were quickly overcome by fumes emitted by the foam or became trapped in a crush at the front door.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the sentence was handed down Biechele offered his first public comments about what happened, apologising repeatedly.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I will never forget that night and I will never forget the people who were hurt by it. I''m so sorry,\" he said, choking back tears. \u003cbr/\u003eBiechele''s lawyers had asked the judge to show mercy and sentence him to community service. \u003cbr/\u003eThey claimed Biechele is the only person to accept responsibility and is truly remorseful, having written letters of apology to the families of the victims that will be given to them later.\u003cbr/\u003eRandall White, a prosecutor who handled the case brought by the family members, said in court on Wednesday: \"If this isn''t the case that deserves a serious sentence of misdemeanour manslaughter, what one is?\"\u003cbr/\u003eBiechele has said one of the club owners gave him permission to use the pyrotechnics at The Station.
