Various of Beijing Party officials exercising\u003cbr/\u003eCommunist troops make their way to the battlefield, dodging projectiles from the Kuomintang soldiers trying to win ground in a fierce civil war.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's 1946 and, after completing an epic Long March and setting his camp in Yan'an, a young man called Mao Zedong is leading a revolution that will eventually end with the establishment of a China ruled by a single party. \u003cbr/\u003eIn this loose historical approach to the clashes that took place in the dusty mountains of Northern Shaanxi province there is also little suspense about the outcome of the battle.\u003cbr/\u003eA certain historical romanticism surrounding the modern Communist Party is what brings tens of thousands of tourists to 'The Defence of Yan'an,' a historical re-enactment that involves more than 200 performers in a daily show.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter purchasing a ticket to the performance, visitors are even offered a chance to join the 'battle' for an extra fee, with only uniforms of the Red Army being on offer.\u003cbr/\u003eRed tourism, or touring the country in large groups organised and funded by companies and schools, has become a popular way of travelling in China.\u003cbr/\u003eYan'an, the city that served as the headquarters of the Party in its early revolutionary days, is a strong magnet for those prone to nostalgia.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that Communist Party is not exactly the same as its modern day equivalent. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has overcome wars, it has created famines and collective tragedies such as the Cultural Revolution and, in the last three decades, it has reinvented \"communism\" in a context of radical capitalist reforms.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter more than sixty years in power, it has also managed to perpetuate its rule, passing on the power from one generation of leaders to the next.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next changing of the guard is expected to be staged at a much hyped congress that is set to open on 8 November.\u003cbr/\u003eParty leader Hu Jintao and others in his government are expected to cede power to the current Vice President, Xi Jinping and a new generation of young leaders.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They should make China more powerful, not let other foreign powers bully our country,\" said Guo Cuiping, a tourist in Yan'an who was visiting recently with her comrades belonging to a female chorus affiliated with the Xi'an branch of the Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They should protect us. Make our lives better day by day. And take back the Diaoyu islands,\" she said, referring to the Pacific ocean atoll at the centre of a dispute with Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eThat kind of nationalistic sentiment remains the largest base of support for an organisation that, in 2010, enlisted over 80 (m) million members.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our biggest challenge is how to make our path for opening and reform even wider while we move forward,\" said Tan Huwa, an expert of the Party history in the University of Yan'an. \u003cbr/\u003e\"How to share the achievements of opening up and reform with the entire population. To let the brightness of the Party be felt in every corner of the country,\" Tan said.\u003cbr/\u003eEven among the most devoted followers, critics are stepping out with stronger voices of dissent. \u003cbr/\u003eLeaders now face a daunting challenge to keep delivering wealth and prosperity in exchange of political legitimacy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problem that common people in China care most about right now is well-being, which is also an issue that concerns the country,\" said another tourist visiting Yan'an. \u003cbr/\u003e\"And also economic development. Now it's deflation, controlling the level of deflation,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eA slowing economy, environmental degradation and the divides between rich and poor and city-dwellers and farmers are amongst the biggest external challenges to the government and the Party. \u003cbr/\u003eBut internally, the organisation has been challenged in the lead up to the Congress by infighting for shares of power, as well as by the scandalous political fallout of the former Chongqing boss Bo Xilai.\u003cbr/\u003eBut widespread corruption tops the list of internal problems. \u003cbr/\u003eAs China has grown into a different country than the one envisioned by Mao and the early revolutionaries, so have the motivations of some of those who inherited the party leadership.\u003cbr/\u003eFar from the tourists sites, the reality of the modern party is more like a club for career-minded city dwellers, as well as for many who see the organisation as a fast track up the country's social ladder.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Beijing Party School, cadres serving in the capital's municipal government are still instructed in Marxist theories and the doctrines of Mao. \u003cbr/\u003eBut they also have the chance to hold frank and open debates about current affairs, the dangers of rapid development and even the pros and cons of a real democracy. \u003cbr/\u003eDiscussions that, outside of the walls of this academy, would often be unthinkable.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A big issue (that we need to deal with) refers to the nature of the Party, as well as work ethics,\" said Yuan Yueqi, a professor of Party Building and Anti-Corruption studies.\u003cbr/\u003eYuan says that the main message taught by the school is the traditional Communist Party mantra of serving the people first.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When it comes to a civil servant, he should serve the citizens, and improve the way he gives that service,\" Yuan said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So we opened a class on anti-corruption to teach a code of conduct for dealing with these issues.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe upcoming congress, the 18th in the history of the Party after its founding 91 years ago, will name the sixth generation of leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after a bumpy year, it will also be a chance for the party to display its best side. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd for the world to see how fit it is to run the world's most populous
