Pathfinder also carries Sojourner, a microwave oven-sized rover that is the first mobile  robot ever sent to Mars.\u003cbr/\u003eMission managers still interpreting data sent back from the craft say that  Sojourner is  in perfect working condition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mission's primary goal, to characterise the geology of at least a few dozen square  yards (meters) on the Martian surface, is the first step in a new NASA effort to search  for ancient life on the red planet. The program is inspired in part by last summer's  announcement that possible signs of life may be present in a Martian meteorite found in  Antarctica.\u003cbr/\u003eThough Pathfinder carries no instruments designed to detect life, NASA hopes it will  find minerals that could hold microscopic fossils or chemical remains of ancient  microbes. \u003cbr/\u003eFuture missions would collect rocks of that type and return them to Earth for the  detailed analysis required to identify life.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the latest press conference, Pathfinder's Flight Director, Guy Beutelschies,  presented to the conference 'before' and 'after' data images of  an operation to remove  air bag material, caught in the ramp for the Sojourn rover. \u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"And you can see right here that we have some airbag material that looks like it's  hanging over the panel and possibly obstructing the path the ramp would go through,  and that's why we thought we'd try and pull those airbags under the petal.\"\u003cbr/\u003e'Here's an after picture......that it's considerably improved...you can see the edge of the  petal and it seems that the airbags are comfortably below that edge. The only problem  is we can't quite see the full extent.....the picture is chopped off.
