emitters of greenhouse gases is already looking for ways to combat global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the expansive deserts of northwestern China, along the route of the ancient Silk Road, gigantic windmills are sprouting from the barren earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Yumen Wind Power Plant, in Gansu Province, is one of a growing list of renewable energy projects that's being invested in by the Chinese government. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wind farm has 142 wind turbines installed, each one imported from Spain at a cost of about 870-thousand US dollars each.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 74 of them are now actively generating power, while the rest should be online soon.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe plant will be capable of generating 220 (m) million kilowatt hours at full capacity.    \u003cbr/\u003eEach windmill stands 58 metres tall, and at the top the body of the generator is the size of a large delivery van.  \u003cbr/\u003eThough the investment in wind power is high, China is actively seeking to develop renewable energy resources for two reasons.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe first reason is strategic resources; oil is increasingly competitive on the world market, while wind and solar are abundantly available locally. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 27 percent of the Chinese mainland is desert terrain, rich in blowing wind and scorching sun. \u003cbr/\u003eInvestment in wind is cheaper than solar up-front, so this plant is adding to the Gansu Province power grid faster than a separate solar farm under \u003cbr/\u003econstruction in the nearby Dunhuang area.     \u003cbr/\u003eThe other reason for alternative energies is that intense population pressure and industrial demands from the world's most populous and productive nation are making the air dangerously unsafe and adding to global warming concerns. \u003cbr/\u003eMassive amounts of air pollution are emitted by the power plants and factories feeding China's economic boom.    \u003cbr/\u003eChina accounted for 15 percent of the world's greenhouse gases in 2000, second only to the United States' 21 percent, but the fast-growing Chinese economy is expected to surpass the US in emissions in the next couple of years.    \u003cbr/\u003eFor now China is tied to oil and coal and will remain so in the near future, but the government has pledged to scale back the use of coal, as well as tax breaks and electricity for
