Various of historical fencing pictures \u003cbr/\u003eFencing enthusiasts from all over Europe have met in Vienna to clash swords and recreate European sword fights from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. \u003cbr/\u003eAttracting some 200 people the \"Dreyn-Event\" is one of the biggest fencing events of the calendar. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's not the clash of the Titans but here fencing buffs have gathered to share skills, take part in workshops and teach and learn how to use different weapons ranging from Medieval longsword to Renaissance rapier fencing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fencers at the Dreyn-Event want to make sure they are not mistaken for living history enthusiasts. \u003cbr/\u003eRe-enactment is not their goal and costumes are a no-go here. \u003cbr/\u003eHans Heim is a teacher from the fencing group \"Ochs\" in Munich, Germany and is a sought after fencing teacher. \u003cbr/\u003eHe specialises in using a weapon called \"Langes Messer\", literally translated as long knife, which was popular in German-speaking countries in the 15th and 16th Centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he loves being a part of something very old.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To experience history live, to drag history from its grave and to resurrect something really old. You really use your whole body and have to be extremely focussed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFencers go to extreme lengths to be as close to historically accurate fighting as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eMany swords used by the fencers are exact replicas of museum originals down to the very millimetre. \u003cbr/\u003eWith one exception - they're blunt, for safety reasons. \u003cbr/\u003eOther people use faithful recreations made from modern materials like aircraft-grade aluminium. Their weight and balance are always true to the originals. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople often are mistaken in thinking fighting swords are heavy, says Heim.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People often think that swords weigh 10 to 15 kilos. Swords are not heavy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the tournaments and the classes are serious it doesn't mean that the enthusiasts cannot have fun.\u003cbr/\u003eHans Heim shows off a humiliating fencing technique used to deal with an inferior opponent back in the Middle Ages. \u003cbr/\u003eFencers are always keen to learn more and often turn to the past for guidance.\u003cbr/\u003eFencing manuals dating from as early as the 12th Century have been rediscovered and translated into modern languages. \u003cbr/\u003eThe manuals - mostly written in either German or Italian - not only describe techniques in detail, they also feature illustrations giving important clues on how to execute movements. \u003cbr/\u003eEven the famous painter Albrecht Durer was working on his own fencing manual. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever turning old scripture into something that works as intended in the 21st Century is easier said than done. \u003cbr/\u003eWhenever a new work is discovered it brings more questions with it than answers, says Oliver Walter of the local Viennese fencing group Dreynschlag.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There will always be blank spots and that's also the exciting part of our hobby.
