Wide of building\u003cbr/\u003eScientists in Germany have created a residential building that will be fuelled by algae.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo external walls covered in algae will produce heating for the building and will later be harvested and sold.\u003cbr/\u003eThis could be how our homes might look in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eHere algae is not only encouraged to take over the walls, it's even cultivated in bioreactor panels attached outside.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scientists behind the project claim that this building, called the BIQ building from Bio Intelligent Quotient, is the world's first building that uses algae to create heating.\u003cbr/\u003eJan Wurm, one of the designers of the building and an associate director at the engineering firm ARUP, one of the partners in the project, explains:\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we do is that we create plants on the front of the fa�ade. These microalgae grow very fast, about 10 times faster than terrestrial plants.  This happens in a controlled environment in these photobioreactors, which are essentially small aquariums. Now and then we remove some of the algae and get biomass. And at the same time we also get heat.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe algae is fed with liquid nutrients and CO2 , and with the added sunlight the process creates energy which can be harnessed to heat the building's 15 apartments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe algae that is harvested can be sold to companies that use it in nutritional supplements, cosmetic companies or turned in to biogas.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the end, the scientists are hoping that the design will create a steady income as well as a source of energy.\u003cbr/\u003eMartin Kerner is a scientist at Strategic Science Consult (SSC) one of the partners in the project.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the idea of algae panels grew out of a discussion to find an alternative to solar panels panels.\u003cbr/\u003e \"We clearly want to find an alternative to photovoltaics modules,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to try to find out how you can use light energy in order to produce another type of energy. Currently photovoltaics is the main competitor and we are trying to create an alternative with the bioreactors fa�ade.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to producing biomass Kerner says that another advantage of the bioreactor fa�ade is that it simply looks better than photovoltaics panels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe BIQ building was unveiled at the International Building Exhibition in Hamburg.\u003cbr/\u003eThe building will remain on the site after the exhibition is over and according to the organisers of the project most of the 15 apartments have already been rented out to tenants.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the 5-million euro building (US$6.5-million) does look very futuristic and impressive.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the technology does not come cheap.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Kerner the 129 bioreactor panels and the equipment that goes with it cost about 700-thousand euro to produce and install (911-thousand US dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eAnd this is the challenge of the future according to Kerner.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The main issue is that we need to reduce the cost of the equipment,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Here everything was made to order but if we reach large productions then the costs would naturally also go down which will make the technology more competitive.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe scientists will spend the next two years testing the building and evaluating the project.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they hope that it is successful enough for the technology to be installed on buildings in the near future.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, will people be ready to accept algae on their walls, even if it is in a bioreactor panel?\u003cbr/\u003eMarietta Schwarz who came to watch the unveiling of the building says she thinks so.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This green colour, it feels like a piece of nature on the house.
