Close of Su Xinping looking at one of his prints in book: "Sleeping man, departing horse"
In China, a new wave of fashionable contemporary art has exploded onto the scene.
Su Xinping is at the forefront of that movement.
A printmaker by trade, he also produces oil paintings, which typically sell for 10 times the price of a print.
Tucked away in a corner of the Dongbianmen watch tower that overlooks Beijing Railway Station is the Red Gate Gallery.
Constructed in 1436 during the Ming Dynasty, the 30-metre tower stood for centuries as a fortress until it was captured in 1900 by the eight-nation alliance army during the Boxer Rebellion.
Decades later, Australian Brian Wallace transformed the decorative fortress into an art gallery in 1991.
Wallace first came to China in 1986 and soon found himself organising exhibitions for young Chinese artists.
Wallace says he has witnessed the Chinese art movement take off over the years, and today there is a booming market for contemporary artists.
One of the most famous artists on display is Su Xinping.
Born in Jining, Inner Mongolia, in 1960, Xinping served in the army for two years from 1977-79, before graduating from the Tianjin Institute of Fine Arts in 1983.
In 1989, he got a masters degree in printmaking from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), where he is currently a Deputy Professor and Deputy Head of Printmaking.
Wallace first met Su Xinping in 1993 and has represented his work at the gallery many times since then.
He has featured in exhibitions all over the world and his work can be seen at the British Museum in London, as well as in galleries and museums in Australia, Japan, Germany, Finland and the U.S.
Xinping has been teaching for almost 20 years and can often be found supervising graduate students at CAFA, where the stone printing and wood printing studios are next door to each other.
He first became known for his stone prints, or lithographs - a process which can take up to a month depending on the complexity of the picture.
Xinping uses an oil pencil to repeatedly draw an image onto a flat German or French stone, adding more and more detail to the drawing.
The oil is absorbed into the stone, and excess dirt is removed using a spirit as a cleaner.
Ink is applied to the stone using a roller, which is washed and re-inked three times to make the image consistent throughout.
The stone is then run through a press to print the image onto paper.
Ink drawings can be done in a day if the image is simple, though colour prints are more complicated and take more time.
Typically, Xinping produces 20 numbered prints of each of his works.
The stone can be reused once it is polished clean in a lengthy process using a fine sand that is ground into the block using another stone on top.
Several of Xinping's contemporaries at CAFA are also leading printmakers in China, but Su says they were extremely careful as they developed together not to influence each other's style, saying that having the same artistic language equates to failure.
Though Xinping's first love is his printmaking, Chinese artists undergo a very strict training and often have an excellent technical background, which allows them to transfer their skills to other media very easily.
Which makes Xinping's skills very marketable.
While prints tend to be more abstract, the public can associate with oil paintings more easily.
In addition, each oil painting, while often part of a series, is an original, whereas a print has 20 identical copies and so typically sell for about a tenth of the price of an oil painting.
For example, while some of Su's prints can sell for less than US $1,000, his oil painting "Portrait" from 2004 is valued at US $14,000 and his 2008 work "Toast" recently sold for US $70,000.
Xinping says he found it very easy to cross over to oil paintings because the basic principles were the same.
However, his specialty is his prints, which he also makes using wood.
It can take up to two weeks for Xinping to carve an image onto a wooden canvas before using it on the press.
The print can be pressed up to three times, with different colours added each time to give more detail to the print, though the wood is not generally cleaned between each press.
Much of his work depicts the struggles of life in Inner Mongolia, and Xinping says it was his early experiences growing up in the Mongolian grasslands that gave him his most powerful emotions, even after migrating to Beijing.
However, he also draws inspiration from daily life, and the development of his artistic career has been closely connected with China's contemporary social issues.
His 1997 print "Sea of Desire" depicts how the Chinese economy had changed after the country's Reform and Opening policy and tells how people were pursuing more material things, particularly after the Tiananmen Square massacre in June of 1989.
Wallace says the country then experienced a sort of depression until 1991, when a social revival prompted people to go 'jumping into the sea,' and set out into the world on their own.
Though made in early 1989, Xinping's print "Sleeping man, departing horse" foreshadows the Tiananmen incident, as it was inspired by a growing tension amongst Chinese students at the time.
Xinping considers it one of his most important works.
It won several awards and was the first of his work that was truly recognised by the art community, thereby convincing him to pursue a career in printmaking.
And though he has since added oil painting to his repertoire, Wallace says it is still the printmaking that provides Xinping with the greater challenge.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
