Various of brain cancer patient Raja Parray at home being comforted by her daughters and relatives \u003cbr/\u003eA team of medical researchers in Indian-controlled Kashmir is studying whether there is a potential link between the use of chemical pesticides and the number of people needing treatment for brain cancers.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers want controlled studies and tests on orchard workers after early investigations showed they made up 90 percent of the patients who died. \u003cbr/\u003eRaja Parray is battling for her life.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many elderly women in the Kashmir valley, she's spent most of her life tending fruits and vegetables growing in her family's orchard.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in January (2013) she was diagnosed with brain cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors have operated twice, but her condition remains critical.\u003cbr/\u003eParray's husband Ghulam Muhammad Parray says the doctors who treated her suspect the cancer's been caused by her exposure to hazardous chemical pesticides.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We really don't know the cause of her disease. She was not a business woman, but would usually work in the vegetable garden. I also used to be there,\" he says. \"Now doctors tell us that they suspect that some kind of chemicals must have been sprayed in the garden or she must have simply been present when somebody sprayed the chemicals, this could have affected her or made her ill.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe valley here is brimming with fruit which is picked and sold fresh, or dried.\u003cbr/\u003eIt provides people with a much needed livelihood and it's the mainstay of the Kashmir economy.\u003cbr/\u003eApples, apricots, walnut and almonds are grown for domestic consumption and exports.\u003cbr/\u003eOrchard owners use large quantities of chemical pesticides to protect their crops from pests and disease.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of doctors at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinigar say they're alarmed by the number of people from this valley now seeking treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are trying to see if there is a link between the patients of primary malignant brain tumours and their occupation.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir findings published in the Journal of Medical and Paediatric Oncology claim 90 percent of patients who died from a malignant brain tumour were orchard workers from the Kashmir valley.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study claims 389 out of 432 patients who had died of brain cancer from 2005-2008 were either orchard workers, or people living near the orchards. \u003cbr/\u003eIt claims this group was exposed for between ten and twenty years, to high levels of chemicals including chlorpyriphos, dimethoate, mancozeb and captan which the doctors say are neurotoxic and carcinogenic.\u003cbr/\u003eNeuro-surgeon Dr Abdul Rashid Bhat led the team and argues the number of brain cancer patients admitted in the hospital has been rising.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Out of 432 patients which we have seen over a period of fours years, spreading over a period of four years, we see most of the people who have brain cancer or brain tumours, very very high grade tumours, they are from those areas which use pesticides in orchards,\" he says. \"Because every where chemicals are being used in the orchards, to increase the production of the fruits. The trend is alarming.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the study \"millions of tons of pesticides, insecticides and fungicides\" are being used on the orchards.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Bhat says the chemicals are directly absorbed through skin, or inhaled and ingested from pesticides which now pollute the air, soil and water.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They breathe in an environment which is (full of) aerosol, is full of pesticides, they breath in, so they ingest, they drink also,\" he says. \"This is how it comes in contact with a person.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThese orchards have provided Gulzar Ahmad Mir's family with a living for many years and he's convinced without spraying he'll lose his harvest to pests.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We spray the fruits with chemicals so that they don't get attacked by disease,\" he says. \"If the fruits get a disease, then they won't be fit for the market, they simply won't sell.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA large number of orchard farmers aren't aware that they should limit the use of pesticides and they don't know how much is safe to use.\u003cbr/\u003eThis means that they tend to use too much.\u003cbr/\u003eGulzar Ahmad Mir says doctors advise them to wear masks, but this is often ignored.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Doctors have told us that it (spraying chemicals) has side effects and is dangerous for life,\" he says. \"They advise us to use helmets, but we have to do everything, anything to earn our livelihood and for our family.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors' study has focused attention on what the environmentalists in the region have been warning about for some time now.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say there is very little awareness about the harmful effects of toxic pesticides and fungicides on the people who apply it and how residues left in the crops, soil and water can get into the human food chain.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalist Dr Shakeel Ahmad Ramshoo says the economic benefits of the flourishing horticulture business may be more than offset by the future costs to public health.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's urging the government to launch a campaign to educate people about the dangers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The government of Jammu and Kashmir particularly and those scientists there must be large scale trials to prove what environmentalists like Ramshoo claim before any official link is made between the pesticides and the number of cancers.\u003cbr/\u003eDr
