getting much of what they will eat from terrace fields clinging to the sides of mountains.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even here the westernised world is gaining a foothold, and communications media from mobile phones to satellite television are the latest must-haves amongst the rural population. \u003cbr/\u003eHigh in the hills of Guizhou Province, farmers harvest rice in much the same way as their grandfathers did. \u003cbr/\u003eBut work is interrupted by a new tone, more familiar in the western world: the ring of a mobile phone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe farmer stops what he is doing and takes the call. \u003cbr/\u003eThanks to new infrastructure developments, he can communicate with his wife and family in the village below using his mobile phone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese government's \"Three Connects\" programme aims to bring better roads, electricity and television to rural villages across China. \u003cbr/\u003eNow phones and even Internet connections are available in the some remote areas. \u003cbr/\u003ePan Chong Dai, the leader of NanHua Village, says the government has invested heavily in the village building a new road and improving the village square. \u003cbr/\u003eEven in places where the roads are nearly impassable, people can be seen strapping satellite dishes on motorcycles to deliver them into small villages. \u003cbr/\u003eCheap satellite dishes propped up on the roofs of village houses, often using bricks and stones, are bringing the central government's media selection to families across the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese government hopes this will further unify the country and culture. \u003cbr/\u003eMr. Yang grows his own food in a remote village called \"Stone Gate\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe family lives in a mud house shared with the family pig.\u003cbr/\u003eWhether the family know it or not, this infrastructure is bringing the outside world to them. \u003cbr/\u003eRural Chinese children now stare at western television adverts promoting global products, some of which are now within their parent's reach. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the food he grows for the family and for the family pig, Mr. Yang makes about 1000 RMB ($125 USD) cash per year for his family by helping with construction, and work as a labourer. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year he bought a television and satellite dish for 1230 RMB ($1500 USD).\u003cbr/\u003eThis is more than a year's worth of cash income. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family bought the satellite dish through a government loan programme. \u003cbr/\u003eYang Guangbiao will pay off the government loan over the next two years.\u003cbr/\u003eGuangbiao says he bought a television to keep up with modernisation and pass the time. \u003cbr/\u003eAdverts are springing up in far-flung villages as China Mobile signs up more customers. \u003cbr/\u003eChina Mobile, the country's biggest network has invested 9 billion yuan (US$1.12 billion) to cover around 95 per cent of the villages, some of which still have no electricity or roads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local village school has computers and an Internet connection. \u003cbr/\u003eChina's recent developmental miracle has led to a huge imbalance between urban areas and the countryside.\u003cbr/\u003eBut if this rural infrastructure programme proves successful, it will mean huge changes on an unprecedented scale for the 80% of China's 1.3 billion people who live in rural areas. \u003cbr/\u003eEven though some aspects of life -  such as this rice harvest - remain much as they have for over a 1000 years, the  modern infrastructure is set to profoundly
