Wide shot of large water hyacinth floating. \u003cbr/\u003eSwahili/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eIt sounds like an aquatic horror story - an ornamental water lily that mutates into a  noxious weed, choking life out of rivers and lakes. \u003cbr/\u003eBut that's just what's happening with water hyacinth in some of the world's greatest  rivers. Now, scientists in East Africa believe they have a solution. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is here that the River Nile begins its long journey to the Mediterranean.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Nile - one of the world's greatest rivers - is threatened by  miles and miles of  noxious weed that is growing out of control.\u003cbr/\u003eThese floating water hyacinths were introduced into East Africa during the 1800s.  Admired for their beauty, they are believed to have been brought all the way from the  South America for use in ornamental ponds.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the weeds soon outgrew the ponds and were dumped by man into nearby streams  and rivers. \u003cbr/\u003eIn this way the water hyacinth spread rapidly and became a major aquatic weed,  classified by biologists as extremely serious.\u003cbr/\u003eThe drifting mats are readily spread by currents and winds. The plant produces seeds  which can sprout any time within a 20-year period.\u003cbr/\u003eSpanning the globe, water hyacinth infests rivers and lakes on every continent except  for the arctic where it's too cold to thrive.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problem is serious enough to block dams, hampering the proper running of  hydroelectric plants.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at Uganda's Owen's Dam workers have been fighting a losing battle against the  weed for years. Armed only with rakes and shovels, they stand little chance.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003eIt's possible that it's working, but it keeps coming every now and then so that the work  tends to be very difficult.\u003cbr/\u003eQ: What about spraying herbicides?\u003cbr/\u003eA: It could be possible, OK if we use a system of water spraying it could be dangerous  to the fish and to human life.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Oliver Wakuru, Foreman\u003cbr/\u003eIn nearby Kenya, Lake Naivasha is a living testimony to the richness of life on the  African continent. \u003cbr/\u003eWild animals have lived for milleniums, sharing water resources alongside man.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in recent years neither man nor the wildlife here have been spared from the noxious  weeds.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vast mats of water hyacinth have impeded access to fishing areas, destroying fish  traps and forming a fertile breeding ground for water-borne diseases.\u003cbr/\u003ePopulations of waterfowl and other wildlife are reduced and the thick mats of water  hyacinth have depleted the oxygen supply to such an extent that fish cannot survive.\u003cbr/\u003eBut here in Kenya's Biological Control Centre, scientists have been searching for an  environmentally friendly solution. \u003cbr/\u003eHerbicides have been deemed too dangerous, while hand picking has proved to be too  costly and cumbersome.\u003cbr/\u003eSo we have a noxious weed which is called water hyacinth which has invaded our  waters. Actually this is a weed which originates from South America in Brazil... and it is  causing quite a bit of problems. we have for example navigational problems in the area  of transport. We have problems due to breakage of nets. Namely neochetina bruchi and  eichorniae. Experimentation on these two weevils has shown that they are mostly host  specific, meaning they do not attack any other plants.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hard to imagine that these tiny creatures can tackle such a vast problem. But if the  scientists are right, these beetles are going to rid the world of noxious water weed.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have a lot of eating to
