It's being held here at Australia's Royal...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLittle Edward Bolch doesn't know it, but he's helping to fight a killer virus. \u003cbr/\u003eThis six-week old is part of a clinical trial of an oral vaccine that could protect newborn babies from rotavirus. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's being held here at Australia's Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.\u003cbr/\u003eThe virus is so widespread that, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) almost every child in the world will have been infected by it by the time they celebrate their fifth birthday.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralian babies are at particular risk in their first six months until they can be vaccinated against it. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vaccination programme's been in place since 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eHere as in many developed countries, few children die.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the virus still kills babies in developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Julie Bines is leading the research here at the Murdoch Children's Institute.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new vaccine is being tested for safety.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Bines says \"we've given the vaccine to adults, children and now babies. Currently we're studying twenty babies, six to eight weeks of age with one dose of vaccine to show that its safe (and) causes no problems.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSuccess here means the team can move onto trials with a much larger group of babies and children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new vaccine would protect infants from birth because it can be given to newborns as young as one day old. \u003cbr/\u003eLaboratory chief Dr Carl Kirkwood says they aim to produce a vaccine suitable for all countries, but the focus is on the poorer nations.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the focus is on \"the developing country setting where the burden of disease at that neonatal period or zero to two months of age is a lot higher and it would prevent a lot of disease, a lot of deaths.\"\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Ruth Bishop has dedicated nearly forty years of her life to fighting the rotavirus.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was part of the original team which first discovered it, right here in this laboratory in Melbourne back in 1973. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the new vaccine, called RV3, could be a breakthrough for poorer nations where the majority of death occur.\u003cbr/\u003eNinety per cent of the babies killed by rotavirus die in the developing world.\u003cbr/\u003eBishop's ambition is to ensure the vaccine becomes cheap and available everywhere.\u003cbr/\u003eHer legacy she hopes will be \"to see it given to every child in the first month or so of life\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe says it's inevitable that almost everyone will get the virus at some stage, if not several times in their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she says the purpose of the vaccine is to prevent that first infection being life threatening in young children.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year the WHO called for every child worldwide to be protected against rotavirus using currently licensed vaccines. \u003cbr/\u003eBut these can cost up to $200 US dollars per child.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim here now is to bring that cost right down.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Bines is proud of the work they're doing.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the original vaccine discovery was \"a great story, its a great achievement\" \u003cbr/\u003eBut she's most excited by the continued impact the department is having on the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eBines' group has been there \"all the way from a discovery of a virus of great global significance to the worlds children and follow that through the development of a vaccine, really targeting children in developing countries.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"I think its a great achievement from the team\".\u003cbr/\u003eTrials of the new rotavirus vaccine will begin on newborns in Indonesia and New Zealand next year.\u003cbr/\u003eIf that's successful scientist here hope it will be on the market within five years.\u003cbr/\u003eMelbourne, Australia, August 26, 2010\u003cbr/\u003e1.
