The contest began in 1979 as an effort to find a real dog to represent the university's mascot, the Bulldogs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event has become so popular in recent years that a lottery was needed to winnow the field from over 100 bulldogs down to 50 for Monday's competition. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In this case, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder of the judge,\" said Mike Cigelman, who co-directs the event with his wife. \"There are no set rules, there are no set parameters that we use.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSometimes, Cigelman said, entire families will adopt a theme and dress their pet accordingly. \u003cbr/\u003eThat was the case with John Jacobson, who donned a tutu to match his dog, \"Baby\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm dressed like her, because I would never ask her to do anything that I wouldn't do myself,\" Jacobson said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pageant is meant to honor English Bulldogs and all the slovenly traits that have endeared the breed to so many.\u003cbr/\u003e\"She's a good lover, just a cuddler,\" said Shireen Carter of her pet, \"Lola.\" \u003cbr/\u003eCompetitors from as far away as South Dakota and Kansas made the trip to Iowa for the event.\u003cbr/\u003eDes Moines, Iowa - 21 April 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
