Close-up of projection screen showing photos of Agre and MacKinnon \u003cbr/\u003eAmericans Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon won the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for studies of tiny transportation tunnels in cell walls, work that illuminates diseases of the heart, kidneys and nervous system.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Royal Swedish Academy, Agre, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, discovered in 1988 the \"channels\" that let water pass in and out of cells. \u003cbr/\u003eMacKinnon did key studies of the structure and workings of channels that transport charged particles called ions.  He is with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at The Rockefeller University in New York. \u003cbr/\u003eThe research sheds light on such conditions as diabetes.  Serious diseases of the nervous system, muscle and heart can result when ion channels fail to work properly.  This makes ion channels important drug targets for\u003cbr/\u003epharmaceutical industry. \u003cbr/\u003eBengt Norden, chairman of the Nobel Committee for chemistry said these discoveries were of  \"fundamental importance\" for understanding the processes of how, not just humans, but other creatures live. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of Agre's work, researchers can follow in detail a water molecule on its way through the cell membrane and understand why only water, not other small molecules or ions, can pass, the academy said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Nobel Peace Prize was to be announced on Friday in Oslo, Norway. \u003cbr/\u003eThe medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace prizes were first awarded in 1901.  The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was established separately in 1968 by the Swedish central bank, but it is grouped with the other awards.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prizes are presented to the
