Diana was beautiful. The nation fell in love with its new princess.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost effortlessly she revitalised the staid and stuffy image of the royal family.\u003cbr/\u003eRapidly she became a style icon, a byword for glamour, her fashion choices endlessly imitated, and hugely admired for her humanitarian work.\u003cbr/\u003eThis 1996 speech was a reminder of the way she used her  cool, controlled upper-class English accent to highlight the plight of disadvantaged groups in society - lepers in this case.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Leprosy carries with it an additional problem. Another echo of Diana. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the similarities end there, say commentators. \u003cbr/\u003eDiana's former private secretary, Patrick Jephson, points out that Kate is a commoner, not an aristocrat.\u003cbr/\u003eThat could make it harder for her to measure up to Diana, who came from one of England's most ancient and noble families, he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Diana was royal to her fingertips. Kate is not blue-blooded in the same sense. It remains to be seen if Kate is royal to her fingertips.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJephson concedes however that Kate might have what he calls \"natural nobility - some people would say that's the best kind.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDiana didn't sparkle at school, married young, and often saw formal royal engagements as a duty rather than a pleasure - although as her marriage fell apart she threw herself ever more enthusiastically into charitable work.\u003cbr/\u003eKate is different. She has a university degree and she'll be 29 when she marries. And after seven years of close friendship with William, they seem to be much more evenly balanced than Diana and Charles were.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one respect Kate has no option but to follow in Diana's footsteps.
