(Laughs.) This song that we're going to do now I wrote with Jeff Silbar -- it's a story-song, and it's called 'Angels Dancing.'\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. SOUNDBITE (English) Manchester:\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know, when you're first writing a song, you're just facing a blank piece of paper, so you don't know what it can mean to somebody's life. But when you're told that the power and the intention of your song can really change the course of somebody's life for the better, it's remarkable. And I don't take that for granted. But I do love to perform. And I'm ever so grateful that this has turned into a job with a future. (Laughs.)\"\u003cbr/\u003e11. Manchester performs \"Don't Cry Out Loud.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor Melissa Manchester, less is clearly more these days. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the stage at the posh Hollywood supper club, the Cinegrill, she sings one of the old songs: \"Don't Cry Out Loud,\" her 1978 pop-chart hit. \u003cbr/\u003eOn this night, there is no swirling string section, no trumpet piping in during the closing bars and, most significantly, no big belter at the microphone. Accompanied by just a carefully modulated guitar, Manchester does it differently, transforming the one-time power anthem into a tender moment of consolation:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Don't cry out loud./Just keep it inside./And learn how to hide your feelings.\u003cbr/\u003eFly high and proud./And if you should fall/Remember, you almost had it all.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne could debate that Manchester did have it all. By age 24, she'd already co-written and recorded a hit, the top-10 \"Midnight Blue\" (1975). Over the next eight years, there would be others, including the bold ballads \"Just You and I\" (1976) and \"Through the Eyes of Love\" from the film \"Ice Castles\" (1978). The chart run ended with a surprise: her first and only dance-club hit (and only Grammy winner) \"You Should Hear How She Talks About You\" (1982).  \u003cbr/\u003eThere would be a few more albums, a lot more movie themes, even on-screen appearances in a feature film (\"For the Boys,\" with old pal Bette Midler, in 1991) and on TV (as \"Maddy\" on \"Blossom,\" 1993-95). \u003cbr/\u003eA 1995 album, \"If My Heart Had Wings,\" was perhaps most promising, marking her debut with the legendary Atlantic Records, the one-time home of such singing idols as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Dusty Springfield. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I was finally with a record company that I had dreamed of getting with since I was 15,\" Manchester recalls. \u003cbr/\u003eThe high was brief. \"You know, the record took too long to make and we spent too much money on it, which is true with most records,\" she continues. \"And their company policy was that if the single didn't hit in two weeks, they would drop the record. And I thought, 'You know, how do we spell s-t-u-p-i-d? I just can't participate in this anymore. It's just breaking my heart.'\u003cbr/\u003eSo, she quit. Sort of. Manchester focused on raising her two children (the now college-age Nathan and Hannah) with long time husband Keven DeRemer. \"I didn't NOT perform,\" Manchester explains. \"Yeah, you know, I performed occasionally. I was in such despair because I just . . . if I didn't have my music to connect with, I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing. There was never a 'B' plan here; it was just this. So it took me a long time to find my way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe destination: \"When I Look Down That Road\" (KOCH Entertainment), Manchester's first all-new CD in some seven years.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt was husband DeRemer who ultimately showed her a different way of delivering a lyric. \"He said, 'Why don't you sing the way do around the house?'\" Nevertheless, she had to leave home, Los Angeles, to come up with material. \"I was being honoured as a songwriter in Nashville, and I discovered this freedom that I'd never felt before.\" She revealed this to friend and songwriter Paul Williams (\"We've Only Just Begun\") who, Manchester says, told her, \"Then get your ass down to Nashville and write!\" Soon, she was working with with such name collaborators as Williams, Rupert Holmes and Beth Nielsen Chapman.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the CD was born and raised in Nashville, the result is not country. It's a blend of acoustic folk and light soul with more than a hint of contemporary jazz.\u003cbr/\u003eManchester's face lights up upon hearing that analysis. \"You know, somebody mentioned that I was sort of a jazz-pop singer. And I'm thrilled that somebody would find that, at last, in my presentation, because it's such a part of where I live.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn the musical map, that's somewhere between Laura Nyro Drive and Peggy Lee Way: a classy cool. \"We urgently need quiet,\" Manchester notes. \"Quiet is so belittled. It's seen as weakness. But, the truth is, our souls need places to just . . . (breathes a sign relief) . . . rest. And, so, that was my offering on behalf of this album.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eTo get out the word, Manchester is doing it the hard way. Excepting a small but strong smattering of smooth-jazz stations, radio isn't likely to play the new CD. So, she and her band are on the road, this week (2-5 November 2004) at what may be the premiere supper club on the planet, Feinstein's at the Regency in New York City.\u003cbr/\u003eAgain, less is more. \u003cbr/\u003eAt 53, Manchester says she's closer to home softly singing the new stuff at intimate spots than she would be belting out a whole songbook's worth of hits in a concert hall. That said, she still seems open to any and all offers. \"I do love to perform.
