The announcement of the resumption of talks in Beijing comes less than 24-hours after the US declared it...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States and China will return to the negotiating table next week to try to head off a threatened trade war.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement of the resumption of talks in Beijing comes less than 24-hours after the US declared it would impose trade sanctions on China over allegations that it's been producing pirated music, movies and computer software. \u003cbr/\u003eU-S trade representative Mickey Kantor told a news conference Monday (Feb 6) that he expects the Chinese to act on the piracy issue immediately.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S trade representative was all smiles as he announced that the Chinese government had agreed to further talks, helping to avert a full-blown trade war between the United States and China.   \u003cbr/\u003eMickey Kantor praised the Chinese for their quick response to the U-S threat of trade sanctions if talks did not resume.  He also said he expects the Chinese to return to the negotiating table with a plan to ease American concerns over pirated goods.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Let me reiterate that piracy of U-S products is an extremely  serious problem and we expect the Chinese to come to the table prepared to address our concerns over the protection of computer software, chemical and agricultural products, pharmaceutical  trademarks, audio-visual works and books and periodicals.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mickey Kantor - U-S trade representative\u003cbr/\u003eThe move staves off possible U-S imposed sanctions that would have affected many plastic and household products made in China and sold in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe one hundred percent tariffs proposed on the 1.08 billion dollars' (US) worth of goods would only have affected around one percent of China's annual exports.\u003cbr/\u003eBut sanctioning products like telephones and electronics might have sparked a new trade war between the United States and China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trade problem does not stem from products that bear the Made in China label and are sold legally in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican officials would like to see the Chinese crack down on is the illegal trade in pirated videos, music and computer software.  Large quantities of these goods are manufactured in mainland China. They then flood the U-S market at a discount price, costing American companies billions in lost revenue.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the number of arrests for selling pirate goods in the U-S has increased, American officials would like to see the Chinese do more to eliminate their manufacture.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese claim the U-S is asking too much. They say it is difficult to stop an underground economy in pirated materials that flourishes both in the United States and overseas.  While Kantor understands the Chinese cannot stop the trade overnight, he believes there are steps that can be taken at once.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We understand that they can't stop all of the piracy, of every product all over China at once, of course they can't do that. But what they can do is take effective steps in the right direction. There is obvious piracy, beginning with their own Ministries, who are using pirated software in their own operations. It's not great, but you live with it because after all it's China's country and it's their government and up to them to make their own decisions.
