Wide Blomkamp talking to journalist in front of painting in his studio   \u003cbr/\u003eAnti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has inspired many people around the world - in so many different ways.\u003cbr/\u003eFor South African artist Paul Blomkamp, it is Mandela's beautiful smile that inspired him to try and capture it on canvas, and on a mammoth scale.\u003cbr/\u003eBlomkamp has stretched his portrait of Mandela over nine canvases, creating a colorful abstract portrait 4.2 metres high by 4.2 metres wide.   \u003cbr/\u003eIt's so enormous he can't even mount the whole piece in his studio, and had to work square by square, drawing his sharp, abstract lines with the whole man in mind.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"You know, I'm trying to get a very, a very spontaneous look from a very painstaking technique. When I delved into looking at what energy was made of, it had no edge, and it had no texture, so I've got to paint a very precise, clean line with basically no edge and obviously with no texture,\" said Blomkamp.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe portrait took him fourteen months to complete.\u003cbr/\u003eBlomkamp says each line, no matter how tiny, reflects a channel of energy, the energy that he sees emanating from the former president.   \u003cbr/\u003eHe uses masking tape to isolate each space before filling it with color, each shade a product of his instinct.   And he did it again and again.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"We knew it was a very reverent process and a very sacred process. Every morning I'd come in my studio and this beautiful smile was greeting me. And so this picture would sort of be pasted up there. And it was almost like he was allowing to come in and work. He greeted me and he... Gee... I get lost with this poor guy... Oh... It was a very special fourteen months... \" Blomkamp said, overcome with emotion.   \u003cbr/\u003eBlomkamp himself spent years recovering from Legionnaires' disease, a time which he says gave him an opportunity to meditate and gain insight into the way energy flows around the world.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"And why I tear up when I see Mandela, he has made the invisible - love and compassion and gentleness - he's made it visible. We can't understand it, but it's there. It's a feeling. It's a whole... It's a... It's a... And he touches us with this unseen energy. And we all respond. I respond... I respond like mad to the guy,\" said Blomkamp.   \u003cbr/\u003eBlomkamp explained his method for the portrait.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So I had to put this grid on and then scale, put the grid back up onto the canvas. So each little square here becomes about a fifty mil (= millimeters) square on the canvas,\" said Blomkamp.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe painting, which Blomkamp completed in time to mark Mandela's 95th birthday in July, is on sale for 2.75 million South African rand.\u003cbr/\u003eBlomkamp says he hopes a South African will buy the painting, and he will donate some of the proceeds to the fund for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut he hopes too, that the buyer will donate the painting to the institution, once built, so generations of children can share in Mandela's
