We patrol the woodland tracks and guard the trees. We stop drivers transporting trees and check them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Viktor Yevteyev, Forester\u003cbr/\u003eHard times in the countryside have struck at the market for New Year trees.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year, they say they cut and sold five thousand trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, they'll be struggling to sell a tenth of that number.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Russian):\u003cbr/\u003e\"This year, people are hard up. So this year we're planning to cut 500 trees. But I haven't a clue how many we'll be able to sell.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Alexander Soyutin, Forester\u003cbr/\u003eBack in the capital, preparations for the holidays are in full swing.\u003cbr/\u003eMoscow's flamboyant mayor issued a decree earlier this month ordering every shop to put up decorations.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd no expense has been spared from the city budget to erect giant trees around town.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past, the season offered respite from the rigours of Soviet life, and with life in the new Russia equally difficult for many, the nation still grinds to a halt for the duration of the New Year festivities.\u003cbr/\u003eFew bureaucrats or politicians will be at their desks till after January 13th, Orthodox New Year by the old calendar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival is seen as an opportunity by some foreign entrepreneurs.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it might seem to be financial suicide to back a plan to import thousands of fir trees into the country with the planet's largest forests, a Scandinavian firm has done just that - and is selling New Year trees in Moscow for a whopping 50 U-S dollars per metre.\u003cbr/\u003eRich Russians, unable to resist the lure of imported western luxuries, are hooked.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Russian):\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's wonderful to have a tree like this when you're getting your friends round for a party. The only thing is these ones are a bit small.
