diameters of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4 feet) \u003cbr/\u003eThe tallest trees have been measured at more than 370 feet (112 metres). \u003cbr/\u003eThe hardiest members of the species can live to be 2,000 years old. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd now these majestic trees are to be cloned to help secure their future. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time ever, scientists and environmentalists are attempting to clone an entire forest of California redwoods. \u003cbr/\u003eBill Libby has studied redwoods for 50 years and was one of the first scientists to probe redwood genetics at the University of California, Berkeley. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the redwoods promote a sense of well being in most people. \u003cbr/\u003eThe project is the brainchild of a michigan tree expert David Milarch who dreamt of preserving and restoring the ancient trees using the latest advances in genetic cloning.\u003cbr/\u003eMilarch describes the redwoods as \"the global icon of sustainability and longevity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMilarch assembled a team of top tree climbers who use ropes and harnesses to clamber more than 100 feet into the treetops at Roy's Redwoods Preserve. \u003cbr/\u003eThe workers clip boughs from some of the preserve's oldest and tallest trees to get genetically pure samples of some of nature's ultimate survivors. \u003cbr/\u003eMilarch believes these trees can provide the toughest possible stock for a kind of \"genetic savings account\" he hopes can be used to restore old-growth redwoods in their native range up and down the state. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 95 percent of the original forest has been cut down over the last few hundred years. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir high-quality timber has also long been favoured by home builders seeking the same durability that allows the trees to survive so stubbornly in the wild, which has led to widespread harvesting. \u003cbr/\u003eAs co-founder of the Champion Tree Project, Milarch has devoted the past 10 years of his life to collecting buds from so-called \"champion trees\"-the tallest, largest and oldest specimens of individual species. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause coast redwoods can reproduce themselves through a natural cloning process as well as by mating with other trees, one eight hundred year old tree could effectively be the latest incarnation of an individual tree that first saw daylight 20,000 years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eHorticulturists and genetic engineers plan to use the samples from the Marin County redwoods to see which of several techniques-some traditional, some cutting-edge-works best to reproduce the trees. \u003cbr/\u003eMilarch has high hopes for the most advanced approach, known as tissue culturing, which creates exact genetic replicas by manipulating individual cells. \u003cbr/\u003eBill Libby suggests planting the cloned redwoods in another part of the world, like France, New Zealand or Chile. \u003cbr/\u003eMilarch says some of the trees which they reproduce now, will still be here after twenty five generations.\u003cbr/\u003eHe hopes that samples from about 20 individual trees taken from ancient redwood stands in five distinct areas will be enough to get his restoration effort under way. \u003cbr/\u003eNext he plans to solicit landowners and communities for plots of at least five acres where the clones will be planted and, ideally, interbred.
