Wide shot women's Library\u003cbr/\u003eSome young British women are choosing to publish their own handcrafted magazine 'zines' because they find that traditional women's magazines do not reflect their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eSome have taken the idea full circle and are submitting their 'bedroom comics' to national newspapers.\u003cbr/\u003eA new exhibition at The women's Library in London explores the female contribution to women's magazines throughout history.\u003cbr/\u003eThese young women are creating they're own magazines called 'zines' at a workshop in London.\u003cbr/\u003eZines are handcrafted pocket-sized comics or publications that are distributed - often for free - at comic fairs and other events around the country.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to British consumer research company Mintel, the market for women's magazines was estimated to be worth �700 million (USD $999.32 million) in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eZines are different to traditional women's publications in that their content does not focus on fashion, diets and celebrity but instead explore female issues, concerns and attitudes that the mainstream media often overlooks.\u003cbr/\u003eThey tend also to use non-traditional styles such as collages and comic strips.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no official figures about zine making but it has remained a popular albeit underground pursuit in the UK for over a decade.\u003cbr/\u003eYasmin Eshraf is a creative writing student.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that she has come to the workshop to learn about zine making and wants to pursue a career in journalism. \u003cbr/\u003eFelix has travelled from Reading in Berkshire to attend the workshop.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explains that she is defacing the traditional style of women's magazines for her zine page.\u003cbr/\u003eHand made comics like this may seem a little out of place in this digital age but workshop organiser Red Chidgey, thinks that there is still a place for them. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that nothing can replicate the feel and innovation of a handcrafted zine, despite the popularity of social networking sites. \u003cbr/\u003eThese handmade pages highlight the disdain that female workshop goers have for traditional subjects covered in women's magazines: self-obsession, babies and celebrity.\u003cbr/\u003eChidgey says that zines give young women the opportunity to express views and opinions that are not normally represented about them in the mainstream media.\u003cbr/\u003eOccasionally female comic makers break into the mainstream.\u003cbr/\u003eKarrie Fransman is one such example. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years touting her bedroom comics at fairs and markets, she decided to make a career out of it.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explains that she began uploading her cartoons onto her website and then approached a number of national newspapers. One of which offered her a regular strip.\u003cbr/\u003eA new exhibition at the Women's Library in London - 'Between the Covers' - explores the contribution of women to magazines. \u003cbr/\u003eGail Cameron is curator of the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003eCameron wonders however how far women's magazines reflect the actual experience of ordinary women.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen's magazines have a long
