But the rate of teenage mothers remains stubbornly high.\u003cbr/\u003eNow official efforts are going high-tech, with more and more schools using baby simulators to get the message through.\u003cbr/\u003eAlondra Flores Medellin is 17 years old and a single mother. \u003cbr/\u003eHer son, Enrique Alejandro has just turned one. There should have been a birthday party, but Alondra barely has enough money to buy nappies and milk let alone a cake. \u003cbr/\u003eAlondra and her son share this ramshackle two-bedroom house with her parents, three sisters and three young nephews.\u003cbr/\u003eThey subsist on the meagre earnings of Alondra's father, who collects cardboard and plastic bottles on the street to sell to recycling companies.\u003cbr/\u003eAlondra left school when Enrique was born and now attends a government-funded open school where high school dropouts are able to finish their education under more flexible conditions. \u003cbr/\u003eMoney is tight and she gets no help from her ex-boyfriend, who vanished after she fell pregnant. \u003cbr/\u003eAlondra says: \"Sometimes we don't have money for nappies or formula or when he needs anything like going to the doctor we don't have the resources to take him or the money most of all, because you need money for everything. To be a single mother is something very difficult. But you have to try because if you don't help them who will?\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAlondra's situation is common in traditionally Roman Catholic Mexico, where terminations are largely illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe birthrate among girls aged 15 to 19 is the highest in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) at 64.2 per 1,000 births, according to the United Nations Population Fund. That's about three times the rate of the UK and 15 times that of Switzerland.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mexican government is encouraging adolescents to be more responsible. A nationwide education campaign aims to teach primary and high school students about safe sex and the realities of becoming a young parent. \u003cbr/\u003eBaby simulators help reinforce the message. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We did comparative studies between the schools that only had the workshops and the schools where students also had the experience (of the baby simulators) and we found that the rate of pregnancy was dramatically lower,\" says Maria Elena Valencia Gonzalez, the director of the Zapopan division of the Desarrollo Integral de La Familia (DIF), which is the family services department of Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eStudents at this high school in Zapopan, a municipality of Guadalajara in western Mexico, are taking part in one of the workshops. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far this year more than 10,000 students at 170 schools in Zapopan have participated. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government is targeting the campaign at schools in lower socio-economic areas as studies show this is where most teenage pregnancies happen. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's some nervous giggling as the instructor explains how the baby simulator works. \u003cbr/\u003eStudents are allowed to take the babies home for a weekend. Afterwards most say they are turned off the idea of being a parent. For now, at least. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't think it would be that difficult and now I think it's very complicated (to have a baby),\" says 17 year-old Alondra Livier Cobian Parra.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm really not that interested, at least not right now. I think it's a very important step, it's not a play thing,\" says 17 year-old Laura Stephanie Andalon.\u003cbr/\u003eMany girls are forced to abandon their studies after their baby is born, if not before. Their own parents have to work and don't have time to care for an unexpected grandchild and few have the resources to pay for a nanny. In most cases the boyfriend abandons the mother and child.  \u003cbr/\u003eLeezlhy Martinez Sanchez is one of the luckier ones. She is 16 years old and her baby is just a few months old. \u003cbr/\u003eHer boyfriend's mother takes care of the baby during the day, allowing Leezlhy to attend classes, but she misses doing normal teenage things and says she wouldn't have got pregnant at such a young age had she participated in one of the workshops.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I probably wouldn't have had the baby at this age because there (in the workshops), more than anything, they teach you how big a responsibility it is and for that reason I don't think I would have done it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSurrounded by her classmates, Leezlhy looks like a normal teenager. \u003cbr/\u003eBut when the school day ends, it's back to reality. While her friends play sport, hang out at a mall or watch TV, Leezlhy works at a restaurant. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter that closes she goes home to look after her son, do her homework and go to sleep. \u003cbr/\u003eSome teenage girls from poor households see pregnancy as their only viable option. Others are simply careless about using contraception. \u003cbr/\u003eA nationwide survey conducted in 2012 by Mexico's National Institute of Public Health found about one-third of sexually active teenage girls didn't use contraception the first time they had sex. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's despite the fact condoms and the contraceptive pill are freely available at health clinics.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eZapopan - 27 July 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
