Various street scenes\u003cbr/\u003eEng/Czech/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe Czech Republic is getting ready for Wednesday's celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the so-called Velvet Revolution which swept the ruling Communists from power and brought the country its first taste of democracy since World War II.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the 10 years since the bloodless takeover, Czech society has changed beyond recognition and now enjoys all the benefits - and the drawbacks - of free speech and the market economy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut whilst the Czech Republic may have had a relatively smooth ride in adapting to the post-Communist order, many people are disappointed with life in the free world. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd not least amongst them is the country's President, Vaclav Havel, who was once the hero of the revolution but is now an unpopular fallen idol.\u003cbr/\u003ePrague, November 1989.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe people of the former Czechoslovakia demand an end to Communist rule.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery day, more protestors flood the streets, calling for a return to democracy in this central European state of 10 million people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last time this happened in 1968, Russia moved tanks into Czechoslovakia and crushed the popular uprisings of the so-called Prague spring.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this time the country's Communist leaders realise they cannot fight the tide of public opinion and they bow to the inevitable and hand over power in what history will record as the Velvet Revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eIn less than a month, the crowds gathered in Prague's Wenceslas Square were victorious. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd by popular demand, the leader of that Velvet Revolution, Vaclav Havel, became the President of Czechoslovakia in December 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eThree years later, Slovakia split from Czechoslovakia, and Havel became President of the new Czech Republic in 1993. \u003cbr/\u003eHe promised to provide the country with parliamentary democracy and a market economy.\u003cbr/\u003eTen years later, Havel is still in power, having won a second term in office in 1998.\u003cbr/\u003eBut nowadays, he is a fallen hero, \u003cbr/\u003eEvery bookshop in Prague contains evidence of Havel's fall from grace. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the most popular books on sale tell the tale of Havel's relationship with Dagmar, the unpopular actress he married after the death of his wife.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom behind the walls of Prague Castle, where Havel's office is based, stories have emerged in one book of Dagmar's reported appeal to witches to cure her husband's recent illness.  \u003cbr/\u003eJust as his Communist predecessors might once have done, Havel has tried to have the book banned, but has succeeded only in becoming more unpopular still.\u003cbr/\u003eBut if the man who created the Czech Republic has fallen into disgrace, what of the society he created?\u003cbr/\u003eNowadays, it's tourists that flock to Wenceslas Square. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country that had one of the most restrictive travel policies in Central Europe has become a sort of medieval Disneyland, its architectural riches famous the world over.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe tourists have brought with them money and all the trappings of consumerism.\u003cbr/\u003eThat hasn't stopped people feeling nostalgic for Communism, though, and state television has started re-showing old shows like this one, \"Major Zeman\", about a special agent who helps the Communist regime weed out its enemies.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for Prague's twenty somethings, there is no looking back. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Young people, they maybe look at this and think, \"Okay, that was it, it's a past, but let's continue, let's go on.\"\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Klara Tomaskova, Young Prague Resident\u003cbr/\u003ePolitically, the Czech Republic has moved back towards the left and a left oriented party has ruled the country since elections last year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Communist Party still controls twelve per cent of the new Republic's Parliament and many right wing politicians say they still pose a threat.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the real difference since Communist times can be seen in the country's economy. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dignitaries and politicians gathered here are celebrating the opening of a new production line at the Skoda car factory in the town of Mlada Boleslav.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new development that will mean jobs for another three thousand workers on top of the nearly twenty-three thousand already employed here.\u003cbr/\u003eBut success for Skoda has come at a price.  \u003cbr/\u003eLike many others in the Czech Republic the company has had to adapt to survive over the last ten years and today it's mostly German-owned. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the company's workers do not like working for foreign bosses, but they acknowledge that they have at least kept their jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Skoda's President believes that entering a joint venture with Volkswagen is all that saved Skoda from collapse. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Czech) \u003cbr/\u003e\"For Skoda, the joint venture was a question of survival.  If we look at the other car manufacturers in Eastern Europe who don't have strong strategic partners, we see that all of them are disappearing or having only a marginal influence in the market.  And without Volkswagen the same would probably have happened to Skoda.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Vratislav Kulhanek, Skoda President\u003cbr/\u003eThe real winners on the Czech economic scene are the country's growing number of entrepreneurs.\u003cbr/\u003eVaclav Fischer is one of the republic's most popular politicians and one of its wealthiest citizens.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has launched his own airline, Fischer Air, becoming a Czech version of Richard Branson.  \u003cbr/\u003ePeople like Fisher were once looked down upon as Capitalists, but now more and more Czechs aspire to the kind of success he has achieved.\u003cbr/\u003eBut of course, not everyone will grow rich like him.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd according to the former Czech Prime Minister, those unfulfilled dreams of wealth are creating a class of disillusioned young people who fail to realise how much better their lives are than those of their parents 10 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have to admit that the people don't compare their life now with their life ten years ago.  The people compare their life now with their expectations and, to my great regret, the expectations sometimes grow faster than the reality so the gap between expectations and realities is the same or maybe even growing.
