Mid of car carrying Duch arriving at courthouse\u003cbr/\u003eA UN-backed war crimes tribunal convicted a senior member of the Khmer Rouge regime of crimes against humanity on Monday, sentencing him to 35 years.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the day, Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, arrived at the court in a bullet-proof car and was whisked inside by security guards.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the course of his 77-day trial, he admitted to heading Toul Sleng, a top secret detention centre for the worst \"enemies\" of the state. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 16,000 people passed through its gates before they were killed.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as murder and torture.\u003cbr/\u003eThough widely expected to be found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, many were anxiously awaiting the sentence. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I will be disappointed (if he gets a light sentence) but we will continue and lodge an appeal against it,\" prison survivor Bou Meng said on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eRiot police lined up outside the court on the outskirts of the capital as hundreds of villagers, all of whom lost family members during the Khmer Rouge's 1975-79 reign of terror, were arriving by the bus load earlier on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eAboard one bus was But Tot, who lost relatives under the Khmer Rouge.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If the verdict isn't fair it will be very painful for me. added.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly 14 prisoners are thought to have survived ordeals at the prison that included medieval-like tortures to extract \"confessions\" from supposed\u003cbr/\u003eenemies of the regime, followed by executions and burials in mass graves outside Phnom Penh. \u003cbr/\u003eNorng Chan Phal was just a child in January 1979 and escaped by hiding under a pile of clothes as the guards killed remaining prisoners before abandoning the camp. \u003cbr/\u003e\"As one of the victims I want him to be in prison for a long time,\" he said on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 1.7 (m) million Cambodians died from starvation, medical neglect, slave-like working conditions and execution under the Maoist regime that sought to turn the country into an agrarian utopia. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir bodies were dumped in shallow mass graves that still dot the countryside.\u003cbr/\u003eThe death toll of that time, under leader Pol Pot, was so great that it has been described as genocide.\u003cbr/\u003ePol Pot died in 1998 and four other top members of the Khmer Rouge are awaiting trial.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the other defendants, Duch (pronounced DOIK) was not among the ruling clique and is the only major figure of the regime to have expressed remorse, even offering at one point to face a public stoning.\u003cbr/\u003eHis surprise request on the final day to be
