He couldn't undergo surgery immediately because his lungs were not prepared for it, so we needed to make a hole in the upper chamber so that the pressure in the lungs could come down and then he could undergo surgery.  The procedure by which we made the hole in the upper chambers was using technology which we have used for the first time in the country on only two other children. It's called Intra-Cardiac Echo which means we do an echo cardiogram by putting a wire inside the heart from which we can take images inside the heart. Wide of children standing on a table; baby crawling on it\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialist doctors in India are carrying out life saving surgery on Iraqi children.  \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 80 children are being treated for a variety of conditions at the New Delhi's Apollo Hospital as part of a project set up by the Iraqi Ministry of Health. \u003cbr/\u003eSix year old Mahmood Sabar was born with a single pump in his heart instead of the usual two.\u003cbr/\u003eThe human heart has two sides, the right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen, the oxygen-rich blood  then returns from the lungs and the left side of the heart pumps it to the body.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mahmood's  there was no pump to push oxygen rich blood into his body. \u003cbr/\u003eThe specialist treatment that that Mahmood has needed since birth is unavailable in Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eMahmood's mother Maida Nasser says that as soon as she was given the opportunity to travel by the Iraqi Ministry of Health she bought her son  to India for treatment.  \u003cbr/\u003ePaediatric cardiologists at New Delhi's Apollo Hospital used the latest technology, an interventional surgery called Intra Cardiac Echo (ICE) to make a hole in Mahmood's heart to relieve the pressure in his lungs. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Vikas Kohli, Senior Consultant of  Paediatric Cardiology explained the procedure of the surgery. \u003cbr/\u003eMahmood is now awaiting a final operation before he can return home.  \u003cbr/\u003ePaediatric Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Dr Raja Joshi said that Mahmood will have to avoid strenuous activity, but otherwise he will be able to lead a normal life.\u003cbr/\u003eMahmood is one of more than 80 Iraqi children being treated for various conditions at the Delhi hospital including  congenital heart disease, hip replacement surgery and urological problems.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hospital was approached by the Iraqi Ministry of Health to find out which specialist treatments were available. Individual cases were discussed with the Iraqi doctors and schedules for treatment drawn up.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe children are brought to the hospital in groups so that they do not feel out of place in a foreign country. \u003cbr/\u003eGroup Medical Director, Dr Anupam Sibal explained that at first staff were concerned about the psychological effects of the Iraq War on the children. He adds that interpreters have been brought in to overcome the language barrier and describes the children as friendly and delightful.  \u003cbr/\u003eNew Dehli's Apollo Hospital is renown in India for excellence in healthcare.  It has hospitals in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Colombo and Hyderabad and often attracts overseas patients looking for specialist treatment at a reduced
