The Dow sold off more than half the 1,276 points it added during a five-day rally. \u003cbr/\u003e The market began the day sliding on unnerving holiday sales reports. Downbeat news on manufacturing and construction spending then added to investors' concerns. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd at midday, Wall Street had confirmation of what everyone has suspected for months, that the nation is indeed in a recession. That assessment made the retail sales figures all the more unnerving.\u003cbr/\u003e The Dow Jones industrial average fell 680 points to 8,149.
