Family members holding children\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental concerns took the spotlight at the World Bank/I-M-F (International  Monetary Fund) annual conference in Hong Kong on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants debated the socio-economic impact of progress and rapid economic  growth.\u003cbr/\u003eSome delegates said the environmental price, particularly in Asia, has grown expensive.\u003cbr/\u003eAside from currency turbulence, Southeast Asia has also been gripped by an  environmental disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eFires in Indonesia, an emerging economic market, have created health-threatening  smog covering neighbouring Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.\u003cbr/\u003eRapid development throughout Asia has had an impact, especially on rural areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction of mines, dams, and other quests for natural resources has led to high  and uncontrolled levels of deforestation and pollution of water resources.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problems in rural areas are readily apparent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Bank has issued a particularly damning report on the environment in China  this week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bank says that air pollution alone kills a quarter of a (m) million people there each  year.\u003cbr/\u003eOther environmental problems lead to disease and cost the country economically as  well.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is chronic bronchitis and emphysema and the like.  Often China has rates in  many cities of these diseases that are five times what you would see in other  comparably-sized cities in certainly the industrial world.  So the health consequences  are quite dramatic.  Similarly, the consequences for worker productivity are rather  horrific.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Richard Newfarmer, lead economist, China, World Bank\u003cbr/\u003eChina has put some programmes into place in an effort to protect its population from  the effects of urbanisation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Bank is working with China to come up with a plan to minimise these  effects, including reduction of sulphur emissions from burning coal.\u003cbr/\u003eCoal covers 80 per cent of China's primary commercial energy demand.\u003cbr/\u003eJoint projects between Beijing and the World Bank will include use of renewable energy  sources, phasing out of ozone-depleting substances and sewage collection and  treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eNo new suggestions have been forwarded on solving the current fire problems in  Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bank's environmental experts stressed the importance of preventative measures,  but there are plenty of other hazards that need attention as well.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Right now of course the news is running high with the impact of forest fires and haze in  large parts of Southeast Asia.   But clearly in addition to tropical forest issues, bio- diversity issues are important in many countries in the tropical region.
