Two condors flying with the sun in the background
20. Zoom out from close up of condor to wide of two condors flying
A simple ceremony was held in foothills of the Sierra de Pailemán in Argentina's Rio Negro (Black River) province to mark the release of two young female condors into the wild.
Before the two newcomers were released two other condors could be seen flying around.
They had been released in December 2003, the first birds to be returned to the area, some 1200 kilometres south of Buenos Aires, after they were wiped out in the mid 1800s.
They had come to welcome new members into their flock.
A traditional blessing for the birds' release, led by two elders of the local indigenous community, was performed with conch shells and incense.
The ceremony was watched by a small circle of biologists, zoo officials, and local residents who had gathered to see them off as temperatures in the sierra soared to around 40 degrees centigrade and strong updrafts gusted across the rocky cliffs.
The ceremony continued near the release point where local children tossed condor feathers to the wind symbolising all the extinct condors as wells the parents of the two captive condors.
Then, with observers carefully hidden behind a blind, the cage door was opened.
Nantue, the bolder of the two walked out onto an outcrop and, after a slight hesitation, spread her wings to their full three metre span and she was lifted into flight and freedom for the very first time.
The second condor, Munasca was a little more intimidated but after some minutes she too took her first steps and tentative hops of freedom outside of the cage before being lifted skyward.
Both birds were raised in captivity as part of the Andean Condor Conservation project which was started in 1991 and is centred in Buenos Aires' privately run Jardin Zoológico.
Financed by local and international funds the project is responsible for the reintroduction of almost 30 condors in four countries: Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile, in addition to Argentina.
Hatched in the wild, Nantue was rescued as a young chick after being captured and poorly raised by an Argentinean farm family.
With weak bones and stunted growth due to improper diet, she was nurtured in the Buenos Aires Zoo and was able to recover her health completely.
Munasca hatched and grew in an entirely artificial environment.
Like most of her project peers she taken as an egg from another zoo and incubated in the project's facilities.
As a chick she was fed by a latex puppet and kept from any contact with humans.
Both birds were gradually introduced to adult condors in captivity and as they grew stronger they were put into cages where they could begin to test their wings.
When they were strong enough they were taken by plane to Pailemán and granted their freedom.
All of the condors released by the Andean Condor Conservation Project have been fitted with both radio and GPS transmitters, allowing biologists to locate the birds for observation as well as document the extent, duration and patterns of their flights in order to understand their territorial needs.
The condor is the largest vulture in South America.
It has a wing span of up to 10 feet (3 metres) and more.
Andean condors roost on the face of a cliff, and use the thermal updraft of warm morning air to lift off.
They spend most of the day soaring on the updrafts created by the mountains and valleys.
The Andean condor has a long life, but it breeds very slowly.
It takes them 6 to 8 years before they become mature.
Any interference from humans quickly disturbs their pattern of breeding. Hunters kill the condor for sport, and farmers kill them because they think condors kill their animals.
Because they mate for life, the death of a mate is very hard on the other partner and their chick.
The number of Andean condors has gone down rapidly in recent years, but they still aren't on the official endangered list.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
