Various of protesters marching with banners and flags\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of farmers and landowners marched in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz on Tuesday, in protest over the government's land reform bill. \u003cbr/\u003eLast June (2005) President Evo Morales launched a sweeping land reform plan to hand over roughly 9,600 square miles (24,800 square kilometres) of state-owned land to poor Indians.\u003cbr/\u003eMorales marked then the start of his \"agrarian revolution\" just weeks after his administration nationalised Bolivia's natural gas industry, giving foreign-owned energy companies the option to negotiate new contracts or leave.\u003cbr/\u003eThe redistribution plans are heightening long-standing tension between the prosperous residents of Bolivia's agricultural lowlands and the poorer, mostly Indian people of the western high plains. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the terrain targeted for reform is uncultivated land located in the fertile eastern lowlands.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it will eventually seize and redistribute privately owned land that is unproductive, was obtained illegally or is being used for speculation.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers object to plans for private seizures and to the pace of the process, saying they fear possible environmental damage from mass deforestation could harm farms already in operation.\u003cbr/\u003eMauricio Roca, vice president of the powerful Eastern Agricultural Chamber said on Tuesday, \"we have five-thousand (m) million dollars invested around the country among small, medium and large producers. medium-sized farms and provide communal farm machinery.\u003cbr/\u003eAgribusiness leaders say the government refuses to make any concessions on its proposals, even as officials announced they were still open to discussing the issue.\u003cbr/\u003eJust under 90 percent of Bolivia's productive terrain is worked by only 50-thousand families, leaving (m) millions of Bolivians with little or no
