said more study was needed.\t\u003cbr/\u003eThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations, meeting in Singapore for a two-day summit, has been fighting to shift international focus away from the political and economic woes of many of its 10 members.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the summit, they proposed an East Asian trade alliance and signed a pact to promote electronic commerce and exchanges of information technology.\u003cbr/\u003eSaturday's meetings kicked off with the 10 ASEAN members sitting down for talks with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji.\u003cbr/\u003eSome Southeast Asian nations have expressed concern that cheap Chinese imports could hurt their local industries once China joins WTO, which seeks to give equal market access to all its members.\u003cbr/\u003eLee Kuan Yew, Singapore's elder statesman, had said on Friday that China's expected entry into the WTO would create one of the biggest economic challenges for Southeast Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eHe suggested that the only way to meet that challenge was for Southeast Asian nations to combine in a free trade area.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Zhu said Southeast Asian countries \\\"are not China's main competitors in the markets of the U-S and other developed countries.\\\" \u003cbr/\u003eChina, whose 14-year quest to join the WTO appears to be nearing completion, mainly sells manufactured goods in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eASEAN's exports to the United States are mostly high-tech products such as computer microchips, according to Zhu.\u003cbr/\u003eHe suggested five measures to boost cooperation, So, it will be a good thing.\\\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Wang Yi, Chinese Government Spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eASEAN is trying to regain its former economic glory that was devastated by the 1997/98 financial crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile many Northeast Asian nations responded to that crisis by reforming their economies and opening up key sectors, much of Southeast Asia was criticised for its handling of the crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eMalaysia imposed capital controls, for instance, and Indonesia came under fire for the botched reforms of its distressed banking sector.\u003cbr/\u003eThe result was that crucial foreign investment flowed to countries offering more security such as South Korea and China, and steered clear of many ASEAN members. \u003cbr/\u003eASEAN now hopes to transform Northeast Asia from a feared competitor into an engine of growth for their economies.\u003cbr/\u003eWhether China, Japan and South Korea will go along with ASEAN's ambitions is an open question, but the responses on Saturday were generally positive.\u003cbr/\u003eJapanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori said there had been a \\\"very fruitful and positive discussion\\\" to seek the direction of regional cooperation in East Asia toward the 21st century.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring Friday's conference among leaders of East Asia's 13 states, dubbed the ASEAN-plus-three summit, Mori had proposed that the countries work around three principles of regional cooperation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe principles are building partnerships, promoting open regional cooperation, and expanding dialogue from mainly economic issues to include politics and security.\u003cbr/\u003eMori also highly evaluated the consensus reached among the region's leaders to draw up specific cooperative measures to deal with globalisation and the information technology revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eHe proposed one such measure to ASEAN on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Japanese)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"Recognising the importance of exchanging people, particularly the exchange of youths, will play a major role in the 21st century.
