Thatcher's support for Major has been lukewarm so far - she referred to him as a sound conservative.\u003cbr/\u003eLady Thatcher was besieged by questions about the Conservative Party leadership in Britain as she began her U-S book tour Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eLady Thatcher kicked off her book tour at the National Press Club in Washington to promote the second volume of her best-selling memoirs \"Margaret Thatcher: The Path to Power\". \u003cbr/\u003eBut uppermost in everyone's mind was the battle for leadership of the conservative party in Britain.  To begin with, the former British premier was guarded in her comments on the election. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, when asked whom she preferred, Redwood or Major, her comments  left no room for doubt.\u003cbr/\u003eNow John Redwood is very able. He was for three years the head of my policy unit in Downing Street in 1984, 1985 to 1986. He's very able indeed.  He is very articulate\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION  Lady Thatcher\u003cbr/\u003eAsked to clarify her position, Lady Thatcher  would not specifically back one over the other.
