lawyer said Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eA senior court official denied the report.\u003cbr/\u003eTa Mok, who is 74, was dubbed the \"Butcher\" for his ruthlessness as the group's military chief, survived consecutive heart attacks Thursday night and is in a serious condition, said a statement from lawyer,\u003cbr/\u003eBenson Samay. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Military Court Director Ney Thol told The Associated Press on Monday that as far as he knew, Ta Mok's health was fine.\u003cbr/\u003eTa Mok is one of two senior Khmer Rouge figures being held pending a planned trial of leaders of the communist regime under whose 1975-79 rule about one point seven million Cambodians died from starvation, overwork or execution. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other is chief executioner, Kaing Khek Iev. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the Khmer Rouge's aging leadership have either died or defected to the Cambodian government's side and remain free in Cambodia. \u003cbr/\u003eBenson Samay said guards noticed Ta Mok was very sick Thursday night and contacted a doctor. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the heart attacks, Ta Mok's condition has improved but it was still serious, the lawyer said.\u003cbr/\u003eTa Mok would continue to receive treatment at the Military Court prison in central Phnom Penh where he has been held for the past 15 months, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eTa Mok, who lost one leg in a land mine explosion in the early 1980s, had been the last top rebel at large until his arrest in March 1999, after the demise of the Khmer Rouge in late 1998. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was a top lieutenant of Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot who died earlier in 1998.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, given the conflicting information about Ta Mok's condition, Youk Chhang did not rule out that the heart attack report was an attempt by his counsel to win sympathy for the aging rebel.\u003cbr/\u003eNo date has been set for the genocide trial. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations and Prime Minister Hun Sen have agreed on a judicial formula for the proceedings, but the Cambodian parliament has yet to pass a law necessary for it to go ahead. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are concerns that lawmakers, some of them former Khmer Rouge, are dragging their feet on the issue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prison where Ta Mok is detained is near Tuol Sleng, the former Khmer Rouge interrogation and torture center run by Kaing Khek Iev, where
