aquaculture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new diet may hold the key to increasing the sustainability of aquaculture - and also to providing increasing levels of protein to feed the world's growing population.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers at the the University of Maryland's Centre for Environmental Science, in Baltimore, explained their findings on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is one of our all plant-protein-based diets,\" said Aaron Watson, a scientist at the centre's Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, as he scattered food pellets into a tank full of sea bream.\u003cbr/\u003eSea bream, along with other highly valued species like cobia and striped bass, is a predator and eats other fish to survive.\u003cbr/\u003eIn captivity, its diet is typically a combination of fishmeal and fish oil produced from wild-caught fish.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it can take as much as five pounds of wild fish to produce just one pound of farm-raised fish. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists have known for years that this rate of production is unsustainable.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Watson, the new plant-protein-based diet may be the answer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is soybean meal, wheat flower, soy protein concentrate, corn protein concentrate, and so all the protein is coming from those plant ingredients,\" he explained.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile currently in the testing phase, results are very positive.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would love to see these more sustainable plant-based diets being utilised on a larger scale, to help not only increase the sustainability of aquaculture, but hopefully in the long run reduce pressure on wild fisheries, as well as allowing aquaculture to really expand to meet global protein needs,\" Watson added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US scientists also said that levels of mercury and PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) in the fish are almost two thirds lower because of their vegetarian diet.\u003cbr/\u003eAllen Place, who's also involved
