The red indicates warmer than normal temperatures - the blue, cooler than normal.\u003cbr/\u003eBy this month, the extreme temperatures had begun to return to normal.\u003cbr/\u003eBut scientists believe it could be the start of a La Nina - the opposite of an El Nino.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The stage is set for a La Nina because the heat supply becomes less, becomes deficit so that cold water from deep ocean swells up to the shallow depths and when the trade winds regain its strength last month the temperature dropped very rapidly in the central Pacific .\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Lee Fu/NASA Scientist\u003cbr/\u003eScientists call it the \"El Nino - La Nina pattern.\" and believe that global warming is making the occurrences much more frequent. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This planet is getting warmer. there is more energy to drive phenomena like the El Nino and La Nina.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Dr. Lee Fu/NASA Scientist\u003cbr/\u003eThe end of the El Nino has already had a startling effect on the waters around the Galapagos Islands.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the El Nino months, the surrounding waters were much warmer than normal... choking off essential ocean nutrients, and killing much of the plant and animal life on the islands.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as El Nino ended cold water returned, bringing back life along with it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When El Nino ends, and it ended very abruptly this time around the Galapagos, in the course of a less than a week, what happens is these surface waters which were very warm\u003cbr/\u003eand depleted in nutrients are replaced by deep, cold upwelled water, which now brings nutrients up to the surface, allowing the phytoplankton to bloom. And what we're able to see from one week to the next, is an increase in phytoplankton concentrations  - about 150 thousand square kilometers of ocean bloomed in less than a week.
