Men take turns struggling with the wood.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional dance is an important part of life for the many tribes of Vanuatu. \u003cbr/\u003eVanuatu is a nation of South Pacific islands some 1,750 kilometres (1087 miles) from Australia.\u003cbr/\u003eA world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Ofer Shagan, the honorary village senior chief of Rano Village on Malekula Island in Vanuatu has been invited to join a traditional dance. \u003cbr/\u003eThe island nation in the South Pacific Ocean still brims with traditions dating back thousands of years. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most powerfully guarded ancient cultural activities is dancing.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis dance, with its use of paddles, tells the story of how this tribe first came to Vanuatu.\u003cbr/\u003eShagan is a Tokyo based, Israeli art collector and property developer, who was asked by villagers to become a senior chief after several business visits to the island in 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eHe regularly presides over rituals on Malekula. He explains that there are many different types of dance traditions across Vanuatu:\u003cbr/\u003e\"As far as we know the people in Vanuatu came from neighbouring islands and from Papua New Guinea as well. Starting to arrive 5000 years ago. Each community spoke a different language and naturally they had their own customs, including their own traditional dancing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisiting the island can almost feel like a dance festival with different cultural dances taking place at the same time.\u003cbr/\u003eOn another part of the island men are performing the \"Snake Dance\". They believe the spirit of the snake is enclosed in the banana leaves.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vast majority of Vanuatu's inhabitants are of Melanesian origin.  \u003cbr/\u003eHaving been converted by 19th century European missionaries, their religion is officially Christian and churches are dotted all over the islands.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the villagers have retained many of their traditional mystic beliefs and traditions and blend them with their Christian faith.\u003cbr/\u003eVeronic, daughter of the Rano village chief explains how important customs have their own dance:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have many custom ceremonies. For example: circumcision custom ceremony; marriage custom ceremony; Namaki (tribe grade taking) custom ceremony. Each custom dance has its own dance. Ladies by themselves. They have their own and men have their own.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKen, the son of the Rano Village explains that in some areas dances are kept strictly away from outsiders' eyes:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Some tribes they have their own. You can not, you can not display their dance, no. In the custom. If you want to do that you must ask permission first. And if they give you the right you can use their dance.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis dance represents the act of looking for wild pigs. According to Ken, one of the main aims of the dance is to connect with the spirit of the local area.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains: \"When they sing a song and then they call the spirit from the area. If the spirit of the area here, you call the spirit from this area to come in. When come in then you start to feel the moving moving moving. But when you walk there you must close your eyes. If you open your eyes the spirit cannot go in. It just finish. It just go on. You must close your eyes. And then you handle the wood. So you feel how the spirit move with the wood.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe dancers eventually achieve their aim as the spirit inside the stick seems to take on movement of its own while series of men grapple
