Man picking grapes
Its been some time since European wine producers first faced competition from 'New World' wine-growing counties such as Chile and Australia, but now British wine drinkers are discovering a new vintage, and one that's grown closer to home.
Global warming is said to be helping grapes to grow in milder cross-Channel climates, and the UK's wines are most definitely on the up.
Former Royal Air Force pilot, Bob Lindo, started the Camel Valley vineyard from scratch twenty-five years ago with his wife and family in the South West of England,
In a good year, Camel Valley will produce around 15-thousand bottles of wine, the emphasis increasingly being on sparkling varieties.
Bob Lindo says that the Pinot Noir grape suits the Cornish climate and environment best.
The vineyard is on a sunny, south facing slope above the River Camel, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) west of Bodmin in Cornwall.
Bob Lindo's aim has been to combine traditional vineyard practices with a New World approach to wine making to ensure high quality white, red and sparkling wines from their 8,000 vines.
The extraordinarily hot summer of 2006 has meant the grape crop is up 50 percent on last year - off the same number of vines - and Bob says demand for his wines just keeps growing.
Sam Lindo, Bob's son, helped plant the original vineyard, and now is in charge of winemaking.
He believes the area's mild climate, concentration of clear sunlight, and clean air gives Camel Valley wines a distinctive fresh Cornish style.
A variety of grapes are grown here, mainly Seyval, Reichensteiner, Bacchus, Triomphe, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir.
The Lindo's approach of growing a variety of grapes helps lower the 'flowering risk', where a crop can be ruined by heavy rainfall during the flowering season.
It also means they can give their customers the kind of wine they are looking for.
Bob Lindo believes that his wines have a uniquely English taste and, as a result, have a special appeal for the English palate.
Camel Valley and Bob Lindo are well known in English wine circles for winning awards.
Last year the International Wine Challenge - the biggest blind tasting in the world - awarded Camel Valley's Brut a gold medal.
Tom Stevenson is the chief author of the 'Wine Report', an acclaimed annual assessment of the the best of the world wines.
He believes that Camel Valley wines have gone from strength to strength, particularly since the introduction of their Pinot Noir Rose.
Stevenson says that sparkling wines from the UK are increasingly recognised as something special by wine-connoisseurs worldwide.
The Pinot Noir Rose is top of the range at Camel Valley wines, and as such is the most expensive.
Bob Lindo says the price of wine, like everything else, is relative, and not always a reflection of the quality.
With global temperatures said to be rising, its thought that English wines will increasingly compare well to those from more warmer climates.
Scientists at the UK Metrological office say that recent research undertaken in the Midlands and East Anglia show that since 1960 average temperatures have increased by one degree celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
Bob Lindo says the increase in temperatures means they no longer need polytunnel green houses to grow the grapes.
And with Cornwall being around 80 miles (129 kilometres) north of the Champagne region in France, it seems that sparkling wines might grow especially well in the area.
English wine is not such a new phenomenon. Vineyards were introduced to the UK during the Roman occupation and flourished until the 13th century, when the climate cooled.
Britain's modern-day wine business produces an average of 1.9 (m) million bottles annually, a small amount compared with the 7 (b) billion bottles manufactured in France each year.
But a marginal rise in global temperatures - bringing hotter, drier summers to southern England - could help the fledgling industry spread its wings and challenge some of its French rivals.

<div
