world, but the problems are particularly relevant in host country China, where it is estimated that 90 percent of the nation's poor live in areas of declining water resources and soil quality. opening ceremony of the 12th International Soil Conservation conference on Monday, Chinese vice premier Wen Jiabao admitted that his country's social and economic development was being threatened by the effects of desertification. \u003cbr/\u003eHe promised his government, which reportedly already invests 10 (b) billion yuan (1.2 billion US dollars) on water and conservation work, would do more to tackle the issue.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest surveys reveal just why concern for the problem reaches the uppermost echelons of Chinese politics.\u003cbr/\u003eDesert now covers some 27-point-three percent of China's land mass and is spreading by two-thousand-460 square kilometres (950 square miles) every year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the process of soil erosion is active across three-point-five-six (m) million square kilometres (1.4 million square miles) - or 37 percent - of the territory, accounting for an annual loss of nearly 67-thousand hectares (165,000 acres) of cultivated land.\u003cbr/\u003eOver-ploughing, over-logging and over-herding of some of the poorest regions of China are the major causes of local water and soil erosion and consequent ecological deterioration.\u003cbr/\u003eDust storms choke northern China nearly every spring, often blown off the dry expanses of the Mongolian desert plain, but the problem has grown worse in the past 20 years because of massive deforestation and increased drought across the north.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalist Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, believes what was once a local Chinese problem is becoming an international as desert regions spread and dust storms grow in intensity.\u003cbr/\u003eLast spring, a dust storm from the China's northwest travelled so far that some particles reached the west coast of United States after crossing the Pacific Ocean.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts attending this week's conference maintain that the worsening situation can be reversed as long as the
