His departure came after months of bitter political and theatrical infighting. \u003cbr/\u003eA new artistic director was also announced today.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 18 members of the famous Bolshoi Ballet appeared in court today (Friday) after going on strike two weeks ago in protest at losing their Artistic Director Yuri Grigorovich.\u003cbr/\u003eThe strike marked the culmination of months of intrigue and backstage fighting at the world's most famous ballet theatre.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen rumours began to circulate that a new artistic director was to be appointed, the Bolshoi's chief choreographer Yuri Grigorovich quit in protest two weeks ago. \u003cbr/\u003eGrigorovich had been at the Bolshoi, first as a dancer, then for 30 years as chief choreographer.  Many have blamed him for the lacklustre performances which have characterised the Bolshoi's repertoire over the past few years.  But these dancers remained committed to him.\u003cbr/\u003eGrigorovich is a genius, a genius, and to deal with a person in such a way and force him to resign is his creative death.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Bolshoi dancer on trial.\u003cbr/\u003eThe day after Grigorovich resigned the dancers decided to stage a protest and refused to dance.   A scheduled performance of Romeo \u003cbr/\u003eand Juliet was cancelled leaving ticket holders angry and frustrated with the battle over the ballet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tickets are incredibly expensive and almost impossible to\u003cbr/\u003eget.  We had to buy ours for a lot more than they are worth and look\u003cbr/\u003ewhat we get - I had a guest come from another country and what kind\u003cbr/\u003eof impression will he leave with.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION:  Cancelled ballet ticket holder.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new artistic director Vladimir Vasiliyev was introduced to the troupe at a press conference today.  A former star of the Bolshoi, Vasiliyev has pledged to restore the Bolshoi's fame and glory.  He said he will  return the company to its former status as best in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it will be an uphill task.
