Her in-laws doused her in acid after she said her family...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThis is 40 year old acid attack victim - Bushra Shaffi. \u003cbr/\u003eToday she's still coming to terms with the life changing injuries that have meant she's had to rebuild her life bit by bit. \u003cbr/\u003eHer in-laws doused her in acid after she said her family couldn't afford the dowry of fifty thousand rupees (US$550) they were demanding.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says : \"I feel like I cannot participate in family functions, parties, weddings or in gatherings, then I feel like I could have participated if I had been all right ..... I haven't gone with them to family functions in the last fifteen years, and they don't like to take me along with them\".  \u003cbr/\u003eBushra is now working in a beauty parlour saloon as a beautician - she says her appearance has put some people off but those who've booked appointments with her become loyal customers once they've received her treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eAcid Survivors Foundation (ASF) Pakistan was founded in 2006 with the support of a UK-based organisation: Acid Survivors Trust International.\u003cbr/\u003eValerie Khan, the voluntary chairperson, ASF says \"Whenever an attack occurs and we know, people get back to the field offices, to ASF (Acid Survivors Foundation) or to other organisations, then who contact us and say \"look there's been an attack\". So far we have been able to notify more than 700 victims since 2007, but we know that this crime is unfortunately under reported. We know that there at least 200 attacks a year, and we have been providing comprehensive rehabilitation services to at least one hundred and fifty patients\".  \u003cbr/\u003eASF-Pak provides medical, psychosocial and legal support to the victims of acid attacks to ensure they receive physical reconstruction and reintegration into the mainstream of society. \u003cbr/\u003eASF-Pak also has initiatives to engage the media in prevention campaigns.\u003cbr/\u003e30 year old Nusrat Parveen, who lives in an Acid Survivor Foundation rehabilitation Centre , says when her younger brother refused to marry her husband's sister, her husband fought with her and when she was called into the bedroom she was attacked with acid.\u003cbr/\u003eParveen says :  \"When I became conscious, I was screaming with pain, screaming so much that even when I recall that time, it shakes my world, I struggle like a fish out of water. I don't want to remember that time, when I remember it, it feels like my life has finished.\" \u003cbr/\u003eToday, the scars are just about healing. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says most importantly such attacks have been outlawed:\u003cbr/\u003e\"There was no such a law in Pakistan, that if some one threw acid they would be punished. Thank God now we have a law and it is easier than before. Before there were many difficulties. I still think that this existing punishment is not enough for criminals (who throw acid)\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAcid burnings are among the most horrific crimes against women in Pakistan that are now criminalised in a landmark set of laws recently passed by parliament. They stand to protect millions of women from common forms of abuse in a conservative, Muslim country with a long history of gender inequality. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two bills containing the new laws, which received final approval from the Senate in December 2011, stiffened the punishment for acid attacks and criminalised practices such as marrying off young girls to settle tribal disputes and preventing women from inheriting property.\u003cbr/\u003eSenator Nilofar Bakhtayar moved the resolution along with other female law makers :\u003cbr/\u003e\"We passed this (Anti women practices bill) recently from the Senate, it is harassment at work place, it is criminalisation of acid crime, so it is many legislations, that we can look back and feel proud about, but unless they are implemented in far flung areas of Pakistan to women's who need these laws. There is no point, we will fail \".  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2010, at least 8,000 acid attacks, forced marriages and other forms of violence against women were reported, according to The Aurat Foundation. Because the group relied mostly on media reports, the figure is likely an undercount.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen are discriminated against in other ways as well. Pakistan ranked third to last in 2011 in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report, only beating Chad and Yemen. The report captures the magnitude of gender-based disparities in things like health and education.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new laws explicitly criminalise acid attacks, meaning convicted attackers could serve a minimum sentence of 14 years that could extend to life, and pay a minimum fine of about $11,200.\u003cbr/\u003eLahore 2 March 2012  \u003cbr/\u003e1.
