Military march from 1997 Republic anniversary\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTurkey celebrates its 75th anniversary as a secular republic on Thursday after being founded in 1923 by national hero Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the country remains divided between its secular modernity and its Islamic religious identity.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd although official events will celebrate Turkey's secular statehood, they'll also act as a warning to the Islamic movement that only a modern outlook will be tolerated.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter defeating the allies in the fight for Turkish independence, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the Turkish Republic from the ruins of the Ottoman empire \u003cbr/\u003eHe dismantled what was left of the old Islamic Ottoman traditions and built a secular state based on Western style democracy\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past 75 years, Turkey has adopted a multi-party system, become a member of NATO and is now desperately seeking membership of the European Union.\u003cbr/\u003eBut today, many Turks feel Ataturk's dream - now known as Kemalism - has lost its direction.\u003cbr/\u003eStraddled between Europe and the Muslim Middle East, they believe Turkey still has a long way to go if it wants to develop a Western style modern identity.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Singling out the Republic as his (Ataturk's) entire project is misleading, because it was much wider that that. It was an attempt to fully secularise and fully modernise the society, which of course has not yet been achieved.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Caglar Keyder, Professor of Sociology, Istanbul Bogazici University\u003cbr/\u003eTurkey remains a hybrid of West and East - an Islamic culture in a secular state.\u003cbr/\u003eBut its dismal human rights record and repression of ethnic Kurds in the East jars with claims that Turkey is modern and democratic.\u003cbr/\u003eReforms have tried but failed to secularise the political system and Islam remains an important feature of Turkish politics.\u003cbr/\u003eIn elections in 1995, the pro-Islamic Welfare Party won a fifth of the vote and held the mayorships of the nations two largest cities, Ankara and Istanbul.\u003cbr/\u003eWelfare Party leader Necmettin Erbakan, pictured here, also headed a coalition government between 1996 and 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Erbakan and his party crossed a line that few openly dare to in Turkey.\u003cbr/\u003eThey snubbed the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, which angered the military - where his ideals are most firmly held.\u003cbr/\u003eEventually a military backed secularist crackdown forced Erbakan out of office in June 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Turkey is overwhelmingly Muslim, few Westernised Turks see religion as a defining force in their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Turks enjoy the modern lifestyle of bars, clubs and shopping centres and the freedom that a democracy and market economy bring.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the vast majority of more traditional-minded Turks feel they have the right to express their religion more emphatically.\u003cbr/\u003eThe banning of the Islamic headscarf in government workplaces and universities has been a controversial and very visible stamp of state influence on public life.\u003cbr/\u003eDemonstrations by headscarved students Islamic activists following Friday prayers have in the past led to clashes with the police.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many liberals believe that to compare the Islamic movement in Turkey to that in say Iran is a gross exaggeration.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't particularly see the Islamic resurgence as being one of trying to find an identity in past (Ottoman) heritage or trying to recover an identity that has been forcefully erased by the Republicans.
