against moves by US biotech company Gilead Sciences to patent a key AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) drug.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian Network for People Living With HIV/AIDS and the Delhi Network of Positive People filed an application at the New Delhi Patent Office on Tuesday opposing a patent request by Gilead Sciences in India for the AIDS drug, Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF).\u003cbr/\u003eAt a news conference, Loon Gangte, a spokesman for the Delhi Network of Positive People said the patent would put the drug out of reach of a majority of the people needing it. \u003cbr/\u003eGovernment estimates put the number of people living with the AIDS virus in India at 5.21 (m) million people, the second highest figure in the world after South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eOf these, only about 20,000 have access to free anti-retroviral treatment under the government''s programme.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Medecins Sans Frontiers, an international medical aid agency which is providing technical support to the Indian groups in their legal battle, patenting in India would exclude millions of people all over the world from access to essential medicines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe generic version of tenofovir has been marketed in India by Cipla since 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eGilead Sciences could not immediately be reached for comment, but said on its
