Pan from Irbil's bazaar to citadel \u003cbr/\u003eResidents in Irbil, in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region, are celebrating the fact that their city's Citadel has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former fortified structure is thought to be the world's oldest permanently inhabited site.\u003cbr/\u003eIrbil Citadel is an imposing fortress that dominates the city's skyline.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth tourists and locals alike come here to revel in this piece of ancient history. \u003cbr/\u003eFor more than eight thousand years the Citadel has guarded Irbil, spanning 430 metres, and towering 32 metres above the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's said to be the longest continuously inhabited site in the world, with Assyrian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Persian and Greek settlers all living on the mound at one point or another.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd now it's been recognised as an important world heritage site too.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter four years on the shortlist, it's been granted UNESCO World Heritage site status.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Citadel is one of more than a thousand diverse sites of cultural and natural importance around the world ranging from Australia's Great Barrier Reef to the United Kingdom's Tower of London.\u003cbr/\u003eStudent Irbil Shwan Najad says the announcement means the Citadel's status as an icon is secure.\u003cbr/\u003e\"About the Citadel, the Citadel is a historical old place. They like to see it and take pictures,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Citadel is currently undergoing a massive renovation and preservation project costing 13 million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eHeaded up by the High Commission for Irbil Citadel Revitalisation (HCECR), they want the Citadel to be restored to it's former glory.\u003cbr/\u003eKurdistan's Regional Government hopes the Citadel's status change will encourage more tourists to the region.\u003cbr/\u003eKurdistan has been named Arab Tourism Capital 2014 and hopes to earn 2.17 US billion dollars through tourism over the next eleven years. \u003cbr/\u003eIrbil's stable security situation is just one reason why it won the accolade.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Northern Kurdish region of Iraq has so far largely stayed out of the conflict
