(Oct. 2)\u003cbr/\u003eThis sycamore is more than just a gnarled old tree in the middle of Jericho, it's perhaps the very one that the Bible says a hated tax collected climbed to get a glimpse of Jesus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tree, though, isn't just at the center of a parable in the book of Luke, but also at the heart of efforts to revitalize the ancient city.\u003cbr/\u003eCrews are constructing a 3 million dollar complex that will open up next to the 60-foot tall sycamore, just in time for Jericho's Ten thousandth birthday celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready about a million tourists a year come here and many say the tree is part of it's lure.\u003cbr/\u003eSOT Anna Boertveit, Norwegian tourist\u003cbr/\u003e \"Of course, we have heard the stories from the Bible and it's great to be here, and I can imagine that it would be like this, I can imagine the tree here, and see the pictures in my head. If it's really the tree (or not) it doesn't matter that much to me.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt's impossible to know for sure if this is the tree mentioned in the Bible, but specialists say preliminary tests show it is more than two thousand years old.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tree, though, does have a rival \u003cbr/\u003eA Greek Orthodox church has encased the huge trunk of a dead sycamore which it says is the biblical tree.\u003cbr/\u003eJericho officials aren't too worried about that controversy, though, as long as one or both of them bring more tourists and their dollars here.\u003cbr/\u003eJericho, West Bank\u003cbr/\u003e1.
