Mid of hospital's waiting room with patients of breathing system ailments
A young woman has become the first person in Iran to benefit from a windpipe transplant using a ground breaking technique where doctors craft the organ within the body using the patient's own stem cells.
The world's first tissue engineered windpipe transplant was in Spain two years ago, but doctors in Iran claim their technique is a first.
To this day there's been less than a handful of transplanted windpipes grown from the patient's own stem cells.
But the medical advance has spurred on these doctors because the new technology could transform the lives of tens of thousands of patients.
This is because Iranian society suffers from a high rate of tracheal and respiratory diseases.
Much of it is a legacy of eight year war with Iraq.
Many people still suffer from health problems caused by mass exposure to chemical weapons following the bombardment.
The war ended in 1988, leaving thousands with serious lung injuries. There were 100,000 such casualties.
Around 52,000 people are still suffering from severe respiratory problems today.
For these men and women a new transplant technique has opened up new horizons.
Car accidents are another major cause of trachea damage in Iran.
According to the Roads and Transportation Ministry 25-thousand people die each year, another 35-thousand are disabled and many of these people could benefit from the transplant.
The first person to have the operation here is a 29 year old woman who lost her trachea in a car accident.
Doctor Jalaladdin Ghanavi, head of the research team says she is in good condition now and can easily breathe.
Dr. Hamid Reza Jabbari, one of the transplant team, says they decided to go ahead with the operation because "it was impossible for this case to undergo any other treatment such as surgery".
Jabbari says it was successful and the woman's breathing is now "completely normal and acceptable."
The team says nanocapsules containing growth and cellular proteins were injected in to the damaged trachea.
Three days later the lining of the woman's trachea was injected with a fabricated trachea framework made of natural materials.
Stem cells of the patient's blood then transformed this framework into cartilaginous cells which eventually formed the new trachea.
Because the operation involves the patient's own stem cells there is no need for them to take immunosuppressant drugs, which can have many side effects.
It takes around 20 to 30 days for the new windpipe to be completed.
The operation takes around half an hour and is very cost effective.
Research prior to the operation was carried out by Dr. Jalaladdin Ghanavi at the Masih Daneshvari Lung and Tuberculosis Laboratory in northern Tehran, part of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Ghanavi says his driving force has primarily been the "large number of car crashes that leave many patients in coma with damaged tracheas and most of the time we have to replace some pipes in the tightened parts of trachea".
He says he's also seen a very high number of patients who are ex-soldiers who were injured.
According to Ghanavi when a chemical weapon is blown up near you, the first part of body which is harmed is your eyes. Then skin is damaged and also trachea is next as soon as the injured takes the first breath.
Ali Akbar Velayati, paediatric consultant & chief adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader claims "this has been done for the first time in the world without any doubt."
Ghanavi also argues the operation is a first.
He says "nowhere in the world, a complete transplanted windpipes constructed from their patient's own stem cells.
The first was in 2008 on a 30 year old woman who'd suffered tuberculosis.
The second patient was a
