case of mad cow disease in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry said it will stick to an earlier pact to resume imports by April of meat from young American cattle - widely believed to be safe from the disease - if the latest infected cow is found to be more than 8 years old, as claimed by the US.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US in 1997 imposed anti-mad cow safeguards, such as banning ground-up cow remains from being added to cattle feed.\u003cbr/\u003eEating contaminated feed is the only way cattle are known to contract the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eSeoul's announcement came after a cow in the southern US state of Alabama tested positive for mad cow disease, the United States' third reported case of the brain-wasting livestock ailment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Embassy in Seoul has said the cow was believed to be about 10 years old, citing a preliminary examination of its teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Kim said that the infected cow's age had yet to be scientifically confirmed. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason why we delayed our onsite inspection of American slaughter houses is because the US hasn't yet confirmed the age under 30 months old. \u003cbr/\u003eUS officials say the disease has not been found in cows below that age.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea was the third-largest foreign market for American beef, after Japan and Mexico, when it shut its doors to US meat in December 2003 after the United States reported its first case of mad cow disease.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists believe the illness - formally called
