mortality rate comparable to a developing nation, there are many problems facing the Aboriginal population.\u003cbr/\u003eAhead of the United Nations International Day of the Worlds Indigenous People on July 9 we look at the plight of Aboriginals living in Australia's cities, who are marginalised from mainstream society and don't receive adequate healthcare. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists are fascinated by Australia's ancient culture.... \u003cbr/\u003eBut the descendants of the country's ancient people find themselves marginalised in modern Australia.   \u003cbr/\u003eMany Aboriginals are reduced to playing music and posing for photos with tourists in places like Sydney's Circular Quay. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in Aboriginal neighbourhoods in Sydney's poorest suburbs life expectancy is low and infant mortality rates are high. \u003cbr/\u003eComparable in fact to some of the world's poorest countries. \u003cbr/\u003eGary Highland, head of Australians for Native Title And Recognition, says Aboriginals are one of the most disadvantaged groups of people in one of the world's wealthiest countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sydney suburb of Redfern has traditionally been an Aboriginal stronghold.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1972, it gained further ground as a focus point for the Aboriginal struggle for equality when the Australian Federal government purchased area of land, known as 'The Block', and returned it to the community.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now Rob Welsh, the chairman of the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council says the indigenous community there may be under threat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe expansion of Sydney's central business district, and Redfern's location next to affluent suburbs, make it a prime target for property developers.\u003cbr/\u003eWelsh says that some Australians are ashamed of Aboriginals and want to see them forced out of the area.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral years ago 'The Block' had a notorious reputation as a haven for drug dealing and alcoholism.\u003cbr/\u003eBut indigenous community's plans to redevelop the area have hit a brick wall with the New South Wales government blocking their proposals and calling them unsustainable.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the area has been significantly improved, problems are still evident.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Welsh, the treatment of the Aboriginal community in the past has certainly contributed to their problems today.\u003cbr/\u003eWelsh's own father was a victim of the 'Stolen Generation' - the Australian policy of trying to re-house mixed-race children with white families.\u003cbr/\u003eAs an eight year old boy, his father broke leg and was sent for medical treatment in Sydney.\u003cbr/\u003eBut rather than being returned to his family, Welsh's father was sent to a Boys Home several hundred miles away.\u003cbr/\u003eWelsh said his father's experience had a major impact on him and his family.\u003cbr/\u003eYet Welsh thinks his father was one of the lucky ones. \u003cbr/\u003eSubstance abuse be it drugs or alcohol, is one contributing factor to the health crisis facing the Aboriginal community.\u003cbr/\u003eAboriginal life expectancy is almost twenty years lower than that of other Australians and the infant mortality rate is three times higher, comparable with a developing country.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Evans, a senior lecturer at Sydney University's School of Indigenous Health says poor education and quality of care for pregnant mothers are important factors in the high death rate of infants. \u003cbr/\u003eEvans also says that many Aboriginal communities lack basic facilities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for New South Wales Indigenous Affairs minister Milton Orkopoulos the reason for the problems facing the indigenous community is simple.\u003cbr/\u003eHe blames it on a culture of intolerance and discrimination from the Australian federal government.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
